Have always appreciated what this "unique" player can contribute to a team. Solid base runner, above average power, excellent defensive outfielder, and a great arm. Josh is only 28. He certainly knows and understands the Boston Red Sox scene.
He would, IMO, be a much better match in our outfield than Rusney Castillo. Betts, Bradley, and Reddick would be the best defensive outfield in baseball this side of Pittsburgh.
Love to hear ideas. How about Castillo, Henry Owens, and a B prospect? Too much? Not enough?
Our pitching is still the number one priority, but picking up another left handed hitting positional player can better balance out the line-up.
THIS COULD BE EXPANDED FURTHER FOR SONNY GRAY, IF YOU WANT.

I couldn't help myself!!
Most of us on here have drooled over Gray.....so lets see if we can match up with Billy Beane for Josh and Sonny.
I've already thrown Henry Owens and Rusney Castillo into the "pot". Now I, for sure, need to add some really outstanding talent to have Sonny Gray included. So here I go:
For Reddick and Gray............Owens, Castillo, Manuel Margot, Clay Buchholz, Pat Light, and Deven Marrero.....and (if possible) some International Slot dough. (If necessary, I would include a 1974 Buick, an original Hula Hoop, a couple of Bobby Darin records, and a life time pass to Wally World!)
Man I love this GM stuff!!

It would be hard to imagine any GM parting with an ace without wanting Anderson Espinoza back in the deal.

If, as many pundits predict, a Rusney-Betts-Jackie OF is the outfield of the future for the Sox, I'd rather hang on to Owens or use him in a group to acquire a Sonny Gray or other young controllable TOTR. Josh Reddick is a nice player, but with what we have, and what's coming soon, the outfield is our best asset. Hard to forego that pass to Wally World, though. Skateboarding through that park is on my bucket list.

I think billy would do a bogaerts betts and Espinoza for gray and reddick trade. I doubt dombrowski would, but why wouldn't billy ask for the world for gray?

Because those broke fools know that they will never be able to resign gray. Dave is going to tell billy that and say that he is not going anywhere with gray and take my offer and convince him that he has plenty of great pitchers coming up through the system and and he is such a great develepor of young talent etc..

No GM in baseball would even ask for Mookie Betts even up for Sonny Gray. Betts at age 22 just had a substantially more valuable season than Gray did at age 25 (6.4 bWAR including baserunning to 5.8), has an extra year of team control, has an inherent much lower risk of serious injury because he's a position player, and has no performance concern equivalent to Gray's career 3.80 SIERA versus 2.88 ERA, which is to say, skepticism that his career .268 BABIP can be sustained. There's a pretty decent chance that Gray just had the most valuable season of his career. Whereas it's very likely that Betts will get even better. You could ask for Bogaerts even up, but I don't think too many GMs would deal Bogaerts for Gray, due to the above-mentioned concerns.

So he's worth 3.0 WAR (which has no value to the A's, and everyone knows that) and a first-round pick, which you can match with any well-established prospect. Your opening offer would be Marrero, and then you'd add Escobar, and then you'd escalate the second player until Beane bites; maybe Light would get it done. Ana maybe if a lot of teams are interested, you have to start talking about Travis ... but this is the sort of ballpark you're in.

Keep in mind that Reddick is basically a platoon outfielder. He sits against a lot of LHPs. If you're rostering him, you're doing it with the understanding that you need to then go acquire a RHH OF to play those games.

Reddick would be a nice addition to be platooned with Castillo. The cost may be too high that I'd rather sign a guy like Rasmus instead.

This is a statement that needs some kind of backup from scouting, but he reduced his K rate vs. LHP to 13.4% and his BABIP was only .234 this year along with a wRC+ of 83. I don't know if that BABIP should be higher, even though it's pretty low for his career, but he's not exactly Pablo bad vs. LHP.

As a Reddick fantasy owner for a large part of the year, I can attest to the fact that he sat a lot against LHPs. He started 27 of Oakland's 47 games against lefties this year. And his career BABIP against LHPs is .255, so I wouldn't expect his line from this year to correct much. Now, some of that may definitely be that the A's are big into platooning and matchups, and I'll admit I was surprised he started 27 games against LHP. Still, I'm not enamored with the idea of acquiring him.

Reddick is a career .227/.290/.392 (89 wRC+) hitter versus LHP, which is really not that bad. When you take into account his defense and baserunning, that line makes him something like an average regular (two-ish wins) versus LHP, which is definitely playable and might even be better than what a cheap right-handed platoon partner would give you versus LHP. Guys like Jason Heyward (career 85 wRC+ versus LHP) and Curtis Granderson (career 87 wRC+ versus LHP) were pretty mediocre hitters versus LHP, but noone thinks of them as platoon outfielders because they manage to add value in other ways (defense/baserunning).

Yeah, I'd meant to add to my prior post that "platoon player" was too strong.

Certainly acquiring Reddick is not as high a priority for Dombrowski as what he is up against with that picthing staff of ours, but I like Josh's all around game. Rusney Castillo playing everyday, at least currently, worries me. He sure looks good in a uniform, but man he is raw. I just think, if not terribly expensive, that Reddick would balance out the line-up nicely.

Yeah, I like Sonny Gray, but I have *huge* reservations about his ability to put up the sort of numbers he has in the cavernous Coliseum (TONS of foul territory) in just an average AL park, let alone the cramped spaces of Fenway. The butterfly effect of fewer foul (and fly) outs, more pitches, having to be over the plate more...even if his BABIP is real, I would think it would go up in a park where he's forced to challenge hitters more to go deep in outings. I'd take Betts over Gray any day, and probably Bogaerts, too. I think leaving Oakland for Fenway makes him a #1a/2, not a 1...and, you know, injury risk and all. Better off signing Price and developing Rodriguez, Owens, Johnson, Espinoza, and Kopech, and hoping one of Buttrey, Barnes, Haley, etc can become a serviceable 5. With Porcello, Kelly, and Miley under control for 3-4 years, and Buchholz for 2, if they sign Price the kids and Kelly have plenty of time to develop. No sense creating a giant hole in the OF to plug one in the rotation, not when they can keep their own players (Betts/Bogaerts) and just fill the rotation hole from outside. Price can reasonably be expected to be worth his deal for 4 years...after that, the home-grown staff will offset declining returns on his contract. Plus, it allows them to trade from established MLB excess, either Miley or Porcello when his contract is more moveable. As for Reddick, I wasn't happy with them trading him in the first place, and a Castillo-Reddick swap of some sort is fine by me. Reddick is an excellent fielder, would probably get a bump in offense at Fenway, and he came up through the system.

Castillo doesn't seem like a trade target Oakland would typically go for. He'd instantly become the highest paid player on their team and would add more than 13% to their budget, while keeping up that commitment till 2020. Maybe if Billy sees an average 4 WAR player over that time frame, but that's quite a leap.
Typically targets of Oakland are younger, cheaper, undervalued, and have cheap team control or little long term commitments (and from what I recall, they usually don't go for the top prospect label guys). I'm thinking it's guys like E-Rod, Owens, JBJ, Johnson, Kelly, Guerra, Marrero, Shaw, Travis, Kopech, Chavis, Barnes, Light, Wright, etc. I'm not trying to say if Billy had a choice of 4 of these guys he'd give up Gray, just that within that pool of players, Billy could probably identify a couple he values more than the Red Sox do, and would be more attractive to them than Castillo.

I'd personally want to steer far away from Sonny Gray. He doesn't miss any bats and had a SIERA almost a full run higher than his ERA. If they're gonna give up a lot for a pitcher, it better be someone who we can be certain is gonna pitch like an ace.
