I just dont like Chicago in general or their fans. Unless they're Bulls or Black Hawk fans, they are long suffering fans, at least baseball-wise. They certainly don't have the arrogance thing down.

I'm going to have to disagree with you there on that last part. Jets fans are also long suffering. Doesnt mean you have to root for them.

I think MLB should expand to 32 teams, let's say Portland and Montreal for arguments sake, and then think outside the box a little with a major restructure. They could restructure the leagues and the playoff formats all at once. I would break the two leagues into two divisions. It wouldn't be perfect but something like:
AL East- Bos, NYY, Tor, Balt, TB, Clev, CWS, Det AL West- LAA, Sea, Oak, Port*, Tex, Hou, KC, Minn
NL East- NYM, Wash, Mia, Atl, Phi, Mont*, Pitt, Cincy NL West- LAD, SF, SD, Ariz, Col, St.L, Milw, ChC
Play 14 games against 7 other teams in your division = 98 Play 6 games against 8 teams in your league (non division) = 48 Play 3 inter league games against 4 teams = 12 (rotate every year so you play each team every 4 yrs)
That's 158 games, which I think is perfect (but you could play inter league teams 4x each to bring it back to 162)
158 games is halfway between the old 154 and modern day 162. Could effect records but it wouldn't be crazy difference. Owners could make up the difference in money with additional playoff games !!!
Playoffs: 2 division winners, plus 4 wild cards (next 4 best records regardless of division) Season could end on a Thursday because of 158 game schedule. Wildcard plays best of 3 on Sat, Sun and Mon, if necessary. All 3 games at higher seed ( 6 @ 3 & 5 @ 4 ) Division series begins Tues in one league and Wed in the other. I realize the layoff isn't ideal (4 or 5 days off) but it would only be one more day off then they have now (3 or 4 days off).
This format would put 1 additional team in the playoffs in each league and give the owners 4-6 wildcard games for TV revenue to help make up for the 4 game shorter schedule. Teams would have a huge incentive (bye) to win the division. They also have a very big incentive to get a higher seed (3 home games vs. 3 away). September races for division titles and/or seeding would be crucial.
I'm sure there's some negatives to this plan, so have at it !

Oh my god, Game 1 is Lester vs. Lackey. I'm going somewhere to have a sad. Jeez I didn't realize that. Meanwhile Cespedes, coming off his monster year, will be in CF for the Mets and could face Lester in the NLCS should the Cubs get past St. Louis and the Mets gets past LA. It makes me sad when I think of how little the Sox have to show for Lester and Lackey, and then I'm amazed that the Sox made out so well with their 3rd best trade chip, Miller, a guy they wouldn't commit a fourth year to in free agency. Other than Rodriguez, that whole trade sequence is so sad. I guess Dan Duquette is the GM the Sox should have dealt with for every deal. He gave us Rodriguez and he gave the Cubs Jake Arietta.

Well the Lester trade wasn't too bad... It was the fact we later traded Cespedes to the Tigers for Porcello that was bad.
The Lackey trade is pretty much indefensible. Even at the time a lot of us on here were scratching our heads.

Hard to believe that the Pirates just had a 98 win season that ended in a 1 game playoff. Fire the GM?
I hate the idea of adding yet another division, which would make it more likely that teams under .500 could make the playoffs when a division is bad. If they also play a disproportionate # of games between same division teams like they do now, even worse teams could get into the playoffs based on how bad the division is. I'd rather they just take the top 4 teams in each league. But I also realize they want more and more teams in the playoffs, probably expanding to 8 teams in each league (half of all teams) making the playoffs at some point, making the regular season worth less and less.
I don't really understand how diehard baseball fans could be happy deciding champions on such small insignificant sample sizes when it takes much longer for true talent to show up - and also when the weather is completely different than the rest of the season which changes the game significantly. I prefer my excitement and enjoyment of baseball to be spread out over 162 games than to be spread out over 3 hours a year.

The Chicago hate in this thread is a little baffling.

Also from that piece: Ah, young Andrew must not remember the way the Sox fans chanted, "DAAAAARRYL! DAAAAARRYL!" at Daryl Strawberry in 1986. It was so mocking and creative, oft copied, never matched. Looked for and couldn't find the photo of the Sox bullpen with "Lil" and "-ly" taped to their jackets. A no-prize to whoever can track that down.

The standing ovation was great also

The Chicago hate in this thread is a little baffling. Its just me really. I know a lot of Boston people seem to like them but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out why people in other parts of the country don't like them either if you've ever been to Chicago or done business there. I'd much rather see any of the AL teams take it.

I'd much rather see any of the AL teams take it. It would wind up being exactly like the Red Sox. Tons of baseball fans were genuinely happy for us after 2004 and it quickly turned into something that rivaled the hatred of the Yankees. Some are just willing to skip the first step.

Jake Diekman is nasty and I'd love him in the Sox bullpen. Shades of Andrew Miller.

Wonderful food, both American meat staples and ethnic. Bars that often stay open almost all night. Beautiful waterfront. Great sports city. The National League Cathedral which Theo and Co are rescuing. Universitiea and medical facilities abound. Midwestern thoughtfulness with big city edge. Unlike my frequent trips to NYC, the locals were unfailingly welcoming and helpful. My 3 favorite cities in the USA are Boston, Chicago, SFO in that order. Except for the cold and wind I would have happily settled there instead of soCal. It's time for their goat curse to end and give the Cards a fight every year.

Everyone has their own experiences. I really enjoyed Houston, Dallas and Toronto and the people there were really nice. I have no strong opinion on the Royals or Cardinals, I see no problem with them.
LA i'm kind of iffy on. Rooted against them hard last few years but with Beckett now gone and the Cubs and Mets in, ill probably have to root for them to take the NL.

Odor just pulled a Mookie Betts on the bases. He advanced to 3rd from 1st on a ground ball where no one was covering 3rd. Then on the next play, scored on a SF with one of the best slides I've ever seen.
