Best nugget I heard in Florida is that the stadium and playing surface in Salem are so bad that the college teams that lease it from FSG are considering going after them.

I think, with the benefit of some spring training performances, we can make a few predictions: Travis Shaw will be in the mix for MVP voting Jackie Bradley, Jr will likely be in the Hall of Fame Mookie Betts will never get a BB again Dustin Pedroia and Pablo Sandoval are cooked Kimbrel, Smith, Barnes, Marmol, and Tazawa will form the core of a spectacular bullpen Price was a disastrous signing Porcello will be DFA'd by June 1 So, you know, things really coming into focus. You didn't even mention Sam Travis. You're about as disconnected as a Sega Genesis.

I get pretty bored with all the Farrell-bashing by Sox fans, so I'm hesitant to say this, but ... gotta say, the way he talks drives me nuts. It's like he needs a good edit of every quote. Here's a bit from that piece: "Last year, when we elevated [Bogaerts] to the three-hole, the same thought or argument could be made. But what happened with Xander when that happened was that he took off and became a very consistent offensive player for us." "But what happened with Xander when that happened was ... " is just terrible. And "the same thought or argument could be made"? God help me. Every quote is like he's trying to pad his word count to get to the assignment limit on a college term paper.

Brian MacPherson @brianmacp 18m18 minutes ago Where did it all go wrong for Daniel Bard, now with the Pirates? He says it goes back farther than we thought: pic.twitter.com/f0dc6ltMtM I love Brian, but it's been no secret that the end of 2011 is when Bard started to go wrong. Posters on this forum have been writing about that for years. I guess it's a revelation that his hand was going numb then or something, but I really don't find this surprising at all.

Fair point. On the other hand, there's a possibility that Marco Hernandez is not much of a step down from Marrero (not as good of a fielder but better stick), if not just as good or better. If someone wants to give you fair value for Marrero in an area of need, I might pull the trigger on that. The starting pitching and outfield depth in the system is kind of scary, the latter especially. Benintendi is the only true OF in the system who projects to reach the majors before 2018 or 2019, although maybe that's where Moncada ends up. In recent days, the more I look at things, I've been struck by how the lack of MLB-ready depth that's going to be ready soon, other than Moncada and Benintendi, has the potential to become a real issue if the kids who are at or nearly at the MLB level don't pan out. Agree on limited observation. Sam Travis and Marco Hernandez are pleasant surprises this spring. Both of those guys can hit for average and I think this year will prove to have more pop when the day is done. A scout friend who was in the DR this winter specifically texted me to ask about Hernandez, and he doesn't do that often. Really liked what he saw from him in an admittedly super-short look.

I'm interested, but surprised to hear that, given how much work the Sox put into these kinds of things. I guess the most important thing is, is the field in good enough shape to get the games in, because there are some fields that are still swamped two days after a good rain. But getting valid reads on defensive plays is also valuable, not to mention avoiding injuries due to field conditions. I hope that if this is true it will be adressed.

Has anyone read anything or seen anything regarding Escobar? I'm curious about the scouting report and whether he's going to get claimed when he's almost assuredly DFA'd or if he could be traded for a bag of balls.

Eeh apparently he was just optioned to Pawtucket. So it seems like he wasn't out of options after all.

Alex Speier @alexspeier 4m4 minutes ago Sox optioned Light, Coyle, Brentz, Escobar, Jerez. Reassigned Solis and Dominguez to minor league camp. Boston Red Sox redsox 20m20 minutes ago #RedSox now have 48 players in big league camp, including 35 players from the 40-man roster and 13 non-roster invitees.

Yeah, they should put him in the pen this year, or at least have a plan to later in the year if he doesn't impress quite a bit. That's pretty much what we all said last year too. According to Over the Monster, some guys get an extra option, which I had no idea about. www.baseballamerica.com/majors/major-league-players-who-qualify-for-a-fourth-option-in-2013/#7ycMjR2P5v79jfFz.97

Xander Bogaerts once again is hitting cleanup behind David Ortiz. It's getting to be more than just John Farrell wanting to look at it.

I knew about the extra option year, but I didn't know that time spent on the DL could cause a year not to count against the 5 years or fewer rule. It looks like Escobar spent just enough time on the DL in 2011 -- two months -- for it to not qualify as an active year (90 days active -- there are about 145 to 150 days in a minor league season). Obviously, last year doesn't qualify. So two of his 7 years don't count, which means he's been optioned in 3 of his 5 active years, and that gives you the fourth year. It's a good rule. It gives the extra option year for guys who sign MLB deals or who otherwise get put on the 40-man roster really quickly, and for guys who miss too much time with development.

Brian MacPherson @brianmacp 3m3 minutes ago Xander Bogaerts once again is hitting cleanup behind David Ortiz. It's getting to be more than just John Farrell wanting to look at it. I've always thought that Pedroia might benefit from Ortiz's protection. He has hit much better in his career in situations where pitchers have to pitch to him because of the base/out situation than when they can pitch around him. So here is Dustin Pedroia (games started only) with Ortiz as the following hitter in the lineup, versus everyone else. RE6 is RE24 (change in Run Expectancy) per 600 PA, and WP6 is Win Probability Added per 600 PA. I've excluded his 2006 cup of coffee. Hitter PA BA OBP SA RE6 WP6 Ortiz 2355 .305 .366 .440 15.55 1.625 Others 3119 .297 .367 .451 11.62 .530 He hasn't hit any differently with Ortiz following him than with others. But he has been better in the clutch, in terms of base/out situation. And when you add in the inning/score situation, he has been hugely better. This makes perfect sense to me. Can you picture in your head Pedroia coming up in a key situation, trying to do too much, swinging at a pitch he shouldn't have, and getting himself out? And you yelling at the screen, "c'mon, Pedey, stop trying to win the game by yourself?" Of course you can. It's been the one defining aspect of his game that's been negative, and we've always cut it some slack because it so clearly comes from a desire to win. What the data says is that when he knows Ortiz is behind him, he doesn't do that s***. Edit: No, this data is not available online. It took me 90 minutes to cobble it up, including grabbing the Sox batting orders and the Pedroia game logs from B-Ref. But I now have a spreadsheet where I can immediately find the name of the following hitter in the lineup for any player for the Sox in 2007-2015.

Actually, there appears to be a subtle difference, one that fits with the hypothesis. Hitter K% UBB% HR/C BABIP Ortiz .097 .084 .023 .322 Others .095 .093 .029 .309 Diff -2% 11% 29% -4% Odds 81% 25% 17% 34% The change in K rate when not behind Ortiz is random, but the 11% increase in unintentional BB rate, the 29% increase in HR / Contact, and the 4% decline in BABIP have odds of happening at random of 25%, 17%, and 34% respectively. The odds of getting all three of those at random together are just 1.5%. And they fit with one another: it's a guy who on average is a bit more patient and goes for the fences rather more often, more than offsetting the resulting drop in BABIP. (Note that he draws a lot more IBB when not hitting in front of Ortiz; his OBP without them is .365 in front of Papi and .364 otherwise.) There's no reason why Pedroia has to hit in front of Papi if he changes his approach. In fact, the best Pedroia, and probably by a decent margin, has been the guy who doesn't hit in front of him, but only in low- (and probably medium-) leverage situations. As he ages, he may be more amenable to not trying to do too much in high-leverage situations when hitting down in the lineup. If he proves to be a bit of a drain hitting second, and he's willing to do that, you could swap him and Hanley.

Can someone explain to me the difference between being sent to minor league camp & being sent to Pawtucket? I believe Pawtucket trains on "field 2" which is the one behind the "faux" Fenway practice field. Do they stay in the big league clubhouse?

A player assigned to Pawtucket means the player is on their roster to start the year. For those sent to minor league camp, it's yet to be determined where they'll start the year.

Actually, this isn't quite it either. Note the precise wording. A player optioned to Pawtucket or Portland is on the 40-man roster. A player reassigned to minor league camp was only in major league camp on a non-roster invite. That's the only significance. Minor league camp is minor league camp, separate from major league camp. In theory, a player's option could be reassigned from Pawtucket to Portland, or Portland to Salem, or something. I note the latter happened with Argenis Diaz the year he was added to the 40. It's not like they don't know where Chris Dominguez or Ali Solis would be starting, assuming they're still in the org, y'know?

“Well, we didn’t anticipate Eduardo Rodriguez’ injury, so that begins to change things,” manager John Farrell said. “But I can’t say there’s been a darkhorse in camp that’s just blown us away.
“Travis Shaw has swung the bat well, there’s no denying it. He’s letting that do the talking. That contribution gets you more at-bats, gets you more playing time. We’re getting him accustomed to more positions. As far as anybody else doing other than what we expected, no.” www.bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox/2016/03/red_sox_roster_projection
