I love Cardinals prospect Jack Flaberty, so this may have gotten me irrationally excited. Not sure how good of a prospect we can get for Marrero. The Cardinals also have a young reliever I'm high on, Sam Tuivailala, and their 2014 first rounder Luke Weaver who has starting potential.

I wasn't. I just thought it was funny/ironic. Any spring training tips for a newbie? I'm heading down next week for the first time ever. Are we allowed to just roam around during the day? Anything I HAVE to check out while down there? Back fields are free during the day.

I wasn't. I just thought it was funny/ironic. Any spring training tips for a newbie? I'm heading down next week for the first time ever. Are we allowed to just roam around during the day? Anything I HAVE to check out while down there? Back fields are free during the day. If there's a major league game, it'll be $10 for parking (I think) and there may be a substantial wait to get out of the parking lot if you leave around the time the game ends (or to get in if you get there close to gametime). Otherwise, both on game days and non-game days there will be parking attendants to direct you. West Lot parking is best for the back fields, the first entrance if you are headed east on Daniels (e.g. coming from 75). As you walk toward the back fields you'll go by the entrance to the batting cages and clubhouse area, where some fans will wait for autographs. You'll definitely have access to the four main back fields, enclosed in chain link fence with some shaded seating. There's a water fountain but nothing for sale as far as food/drink outside the park gates. (You can definitely bring your own snacks and beverages, there's no bag inspection out back.) Not sure exactly what time they come out to the fields but I usually get there nine-ish and players are out (though not always doing more than stretching yet). Most days you can also walk back to Fields 1 and 2 and the Agility Field, often used for major league workouts and BP, but they usually close off the walkway if nothing's going on. There's a midday break for lunch. Before Wednesday, when the games start, the timing can be hard to predict, but once the games get going it's usually pretty quiet 11:30a-12:30p. There may be some intrasquad games or scrimmages against college teams before things get rolling Wednesday. In case you're a true newbie, there are a few things that happen in minor league spring training that might be unexpected. If a pitcher has thrown enough pitches (which often means he's gotten into trouble) they may decide to "roll it," or end the inning prematurely. On the other hand, if a major league pitcher is getting some work, especially if he makes mincemeat out of A-ball kids (Aaron Cook and his oh-so-tempting sinker come to mind), he may get 4-5 outs before the inning break. Major league batters getting extra work may bat second or third in every inning, lineup be damned, and/or may bat in two games at once. And although the teams will be called "Pawtucket" or "Salem," the actual eventual destinations of players aren't hashed out until close to the end of spring.

Well, if there are 17 SS in the BA top100 and Marrero is the 18th-ranked SS, he's not far out of the top100. And he projects to be easily in the top 30 SS in baseball, even if his bat is a wet noodle. Over a full season, he's probably in the 20-25 range. Cooney's too old and the Sox don't need yet another on-the-cusp MLB LH SP. And Weaver is a high floor collegiate product who's still a couple of years away. I'm with you...Flaherty is a good enough prospect, he's young, has a high upside, and the Cards really, really could use a player like Marrero.

I'm not so sure Flaherty alone would get it done for the Cards. I understand the upside argument but where Marrero is likely right around the 100 mark, Flaherty is considerably behind that. He's the 43rd ranked righthander where 29 made the top 100. If there is a swap, the Cards not the Red Sox are the ones that will have to generate the trade proposals. There would likely need to be a trade balancer and that balancer would likely be someone from their 40 man since Flaherty isn't a 40 man member and Marrero is. I really don't see any other single player fit except of course Reyes and that isn't going to happen. LOL, Kelly, Craig and Marrero for Reyes.

I definitely agree that the Sox would be "trading down" in a one-for-one. Flaherty is probably 150 range, so maybe a second prospect who's a 40-man resident makes sense. I think the Sox might be willing to take a bit of a hit on value for upside, but you're right, they're the team with no pressure to trade. Of course, St Louis has some options out there on non-roster invites, so we will have to see. It'll never happen, but could you imagine a Reyes-Espinoza duo in the system? Zoinks, Scoob.

Why do we want to make a trade for the sake of making a trade? If Xander is out two months, it would be nice to have Marrero. I'd only trade Marrero if a team is overpaying because he is decent depth this year.

I'd only trade Marrero if a team is overpaying because he is decent depth this year. Fair point. On the other hand, there's a possibility that Marco Hernandez is not much of a step down from Marrero (not as good of a fielder but better stick), if not just as good or better. If someone wants to give you fair value for Marrero in an area of need, I might pull the trigger on that. The starting pitching and outfield depth in the system is kind of scary, the latter especially. Benintendi is the only true OF in the system who projects to reach the majors before 2018 or 2019, although maybe that's where Moncada ends up. In recent days, the more I look at things, I've been struck by how the lack of MLB-ready depth that's going to be ready soon, other than Moncada and Benintendi, has the potential to become a real issue if the kids who are at or nearly at the MLB level don't pan out.

Where are we not at least 2 deep...C, 1B (Hanley/Shaw/Travis), 2B (Pedey/Holt/Marrero), SS (XB/Marrero/Marco), 3B (Pablo/Shaw), OF (Rusney/JBJ/Betts/Young/Boesch/Murphy)....IMO we're in better shape depthwise than most clubs. There's not a huge talent drop-off from starters to depth here. SS appears thin though after Marco/Marrero, I would be careful not to trade from that position.

Having names is different than having useful depth. Guys like Travis Shaw and Brock Holt and Deven Marrero are good examples of useful depth. Murphy and Boesch, on the other hand, are replacement-level minor league signings who represent significant drop-offs from the starter-level production and combine the trifecta of limited upside, significant downside (both are 30+ and have below-replacement-level seasons in their recent past) and limited roster flexibility (can't be optioned and at least Murphy has an opt-out).

Red Sox have signed Roberto Cancio according to BA's minor league signings tracker.

The Red Sox have control over 8 of their 9 starters through 2019 - and Brock Holt! as a super utility guy. I'm curious if any other team in the majors can make that claim. The upper minors may be bare, but they wouldn't have any place to put the talent if they had it. To me, this is well planned management of a baseball team as the next flight of top talent will arrive shortly before they need it to arrive.
The downside is that there are fewer chips to trade, so they need to make sure to keep using their payroll muscle to sign the Chris Youngs of the world before the season starts.

In general I don't disagree with your analysis. On the other hand, the positional flexibility of the major league outfielders and the versatility of Holt, Shaw and Marrero means that a lot would have to go wrong before we'd see any significant time from replacement level callups.

Not sure I agree about Murphy representing a significant drop off if you compare him to Castillo or Bradley. I also recall a recent comparison of his numbers vs Sandoval and they were very close, recognizing they play different positions. This will be a telling year for both Castillo and Bradley to see if they can provide consistent production. The Red Sox certainly need more production out of their outfield beyond what Mookie produced last year.

Agree on limited observation. Sam Travis and Marco Hernandez are pleasant surprises this spring. Both of those guys can hit for average and I think this year will prove to have more pop when the day is done.

“I don’t expect to be using (the four-seamer) as much as I did when I was struggling,” said Porcello. “I’m going to take the same approach I had toward the end of last season, which is primarily the sinker down. It’s my most important pitch. It’s my bail-out pitch when I need a ground ball, and getting hitters to focus down in the zone is what allows me to get a swing-and-miss with my four-seamer.
“I’ve been first and foremost a sinker-heavy pitcher my entire career. That’s where I’ve had a lot of my success, so I’m not going to jump ship on it. But I have a four-seamer with a good spin rate, and I’m going to use it accordingly.” www.fangraphs.com/blogs/sunday-notes-porcellos-spin-koreas-park-nava-hockey-more/

I think, with the benefit of some spring training performances, we can make a few predictions:
Travis Shaw will be in the mix for MVP voting Jackie Bradley, Jr will likely be in the Hall of Fame Mookie Betts will never get a BB again Dustin Pedroia and Pablo Sandoval are cooked Kimbrel, Smith, Barnes, Marmol, and Tazawa will form the core of a spectacular bullpen Price was a disastrous signing Porcello will be DFA'd by June 1
So, you know, things really coming into focus.
