Can't decide if I'm shocked or not but Don Sweeney just announced that Claude Julien WILL be the head coach next year.
With 2 late season collapses, I thought it was clear but:
1. Claude still has 2 years on his contract 2. Boston just held a celebration for this career wins 3. He really didn't have a Defense
And, yes, I believe the reasons are in that order.

4 more years of Kevan Miller? That's now over 5 million/yr for 2 RH shooting 3rd pairing D-men.
Rinse and repeat. Ugh.

Haggerty has a theory about the signing. After blasting it originally, he's now suggesting (and hearing from others) that this might be a package deal. Jimmy Vesey and Miller share the same agent and the Bruins are known to want Vesey (and Vesey, from the area, would be interested in playing with Boston).
Haggs suggests that this might put Boston as the front runner for JV's services.
That's the only way this makes sense.

Buffalo drops the hammer today...
Sending a 3rd Round Pick (one of their 4) to Nashville for the negotiating rights to Jimmy Vesey.
There is a chance certainly that Vesey will still test the market. But Buffalo now has two months to let Eichel sweet talk one of his best friends into playing on his wing.
Vesey is the best chance we had at landing an impact talent on the cheap.
It's possible the Bruins just missed out on a chance to sign him because Sweeney thought adding to this roster was the right move at the deadline.

To be fair, even before the trade, Buf had two months of Eichel trying to convince his friend to play on his wing. They are training together in Foxboro and there are not tampering rules amongst players (to my knowledge anyway). Sounds like he is going to wait until August to sign no matter what. My pipe dream: Vesey signs with B's and convinces Eichel to come home to join him when he hits free agency in a few years...

There's the Sweeney we are unfortunately getting awfully used to seeing. Huge reach at #29.
Trent Frederic is a big reach, late 2nd early 3rd type talent, doesn't have top 6 upside. Good size at 6'-2", and plays hard, but not a ton of skill. Hope I'm wrong.

He seems like a solid two-way guy who could end up better if he improves his skating. Guys at this part of the draft are interchangeable and the difference between #30 and #50 in the CSS rankings is slim. Sweeney "reached" for a few guys last year, and it turned out well (Zachary Senyshyn, his biggest reach, had a great year, it looks like he hit on all the 2nd rounders and perhaps a few others). Prospect coverage (in all sports) has led to a bunch of armchair GMs relying on mock drafts and "experts" without ever watching a kid play. These GMs put a lot of work into scouting and pick the guys they think are the best, not the guys the "experts" think are best. It doesn't always work, but I assure you, plenty of those "expert" picks fail too. I trust that Sweeney and his staff knows a lot more about hockey than you or I.

I've seen Frederic play a handful of games, and those games were probably his most productive stretch against top level competition (at the WJC last winter) where he excelled in a couple blowout wins and wasn't really a factor against the elite teams. He doesn't have the skill set to play a top 6 role IMO, he's a grinding type 3rd line Center, there is nothing wrong with that. But he isn't an elite finisher, or a speedy guy. I'd still like to have him, just not at the cost of a 1st Round Pick.
When Sweeney "reached" last year for Senyshyn, you could dream on a kid with elite skating ability and a true scoring touch. The only reason ZS didn't go higher is because he played for a junior team that was stacked with older kids and didn't play a ton of minutes.

USNDTP was pretty deep in forwards, and he is going to a top NCAA program, so clearly he is pretty well liked in the industry. If he turns out to be a solid two-way, third line center from the 29th pick, I think the Bruins would be pleased. Anything more is gravy.

Backes signing is interesting. Could lead to Krejci trade for top D

Backes is not interesting - it's terrible and right in line with how pathetic this front office is.
Let's give a 32 year old center who plays a physical game a 5 year deal worth 6m per! Yea that makes sense. What a joke this franchise is.

Somehow, I saw that coming.
Regardless of your opinion, the fact that a Krejci trade could be coming is INTERESTING from a sports news standpoint.
I gotta watch my words on this board like I watch them in front of my 3 yr old.

That disgust that came out in my post wasn't meant towards you; it was meant towards the franchise. Honestly, they have totally screwed themselves and not because of this signing just in general.

The Backes signing is an interesting short term move. But the concern over the terms of the deal are still very real, and continue to give doubts about the FO and the direction of this team. I will wait for the next shoe to drop before I judge this signing though. I don't believe they will trade Krejci, I think Spooner is the one to go. I'd like to see a strong package put together for Tyson Barrie of the Avalanche. Something like Spooner, Subban, a forward prospect (not named Vatrano) and a 1st Rounder (give or take a little). Backes can play some RW if needed, and when it comes down to crunch time they can roll out arguably the deepest three Center's to really lock down. There were no FA defensemen worthy, so they opted to really improve there team defense adding Backes. On top of that, Backes is a no nonsense vocal leader, something the Bruins lack.
Hashtag stay home Vesey, please.

I think they should trade Tuka if they can for a top defenseman. Goalies in the NHL are a bit over rated and paid with the way things are these days. Christ if they kept Jones and traded Tuuka last year they where do we think they may be?

The next shoe better not be Kris Russell. I'd want Sweeney gone more than Farrell if he over pays for Kris freaking Russell.
