Aw, that's Shaw's first error.

We have two players who had bad debut years (both of whom then bounced back and had pretty good sophomore years). Not sure that's a pattern. We can't rule out a systemic problem within the organization, but it's also way too early to suggest that there is a systemic problem with the organization. You could just as well blame Theo/Maddon for the struggles of Addison Russell and Jorge Soler and Javier Baez. It's way to early too conclude that the struggles of the Red Sox young players is systemic; it is not too early to wonder about it. I mean the two guys we're talking about led the team in WAR last year..

Apologies for derailing the thread with this stuff (although this game is one where I needed the distraction). I'm a bit disappointed in how things have played out, but I'm not saying Farrell's to blame, the sky is falling, or there's some systematic failure. Actually this debate stayed completely amicable, which is pretty rare, so kudos to everyone.
And the game comes to an ugly end. Can't wait for this funk to be over.

We've been "lucky" thus far with the injuries: The worst position player and the worst SP. So at least there's that.

This team STINKS. It's amazing how poorly they play at Fenway.

Ballgame. Too brutal to watch anymore.
That was a complete team effort til the 10th. A win could've been something to build on, but the no out bases loaded squander and now this inning, just fugly. There won't be any moral victories in the clubhouse either. These losses sting the worst, and this team just had three in a row.
Against Division opponents.
At home.

Farrell is a highly decent guy … You know this how? His sound bites? Nick Cafardo? His choice in squeezes? Ok, he seems like a decent guy based on the way he carries himself and the way players, reporters and others talk about him. And we all love the way he stared cancer in the face and kicked its ass. Is that better?

Pat Light with a very efficient scoreless 9th; wouldn't be surprised if he swaps places with Barnes after tonight

The fat hick traitor also known as the Texas Con Man was widely thought to be a great guy by players, reporters, and others too — I'm not sure they all feel that way now. There's plenty of other examples. And what does being a cancer survivor have to do with one's morality?

Pathetic performance by the offence. 23 in a row retired. 3(!) batters reach base.

Pathetic performance by the offence. 23 in a row retired. 3(!) batters reach base. It's funny, all three of those batters came with no outs one after another in the same inning. A couple sac flies would have given the Red Sox a comfortable win, but alas...

They waited until 12th & 13th game of season to face LH starters for 1st & 2nd time as the hitters were horrible against them by lack of hitting & runs. It's reason they lost the games. The hitters been cold since last Sunday. No life. Steve Wright, Clay B & 4 bullpen guys after J. Kelly did their job in their last 3 games and get no luck.

Archer and Odorizzi up next, no big deal
lol. How many games under .500 do they have to be before DD pulls the ol' ripcord?

It's way to early too conclude that the struggles of the Red Sox young players is systemic; it is not too early to wonder about it. I mean the two guys we're talking about led the team in WAR last year.. That last post wasn't well expressed. The point I was making is that none of the three players we most need to succeed (Betts, Bradley, Bogaerts) has a walk rate normally commensurate with success. Beyond that their walk rates the last three years (Bradley's 2015 rate being an exception) have both less than one would expect and frankly flirting with dangerously low levels. It is unusual for players with Betts' and Bogaerts' walk rates to achieve sustained success. At this point I think their continued low walk rates have to be a matter of some concern, and the possibility of a systemic organizational issue has to at least be considered.

This guy has no idea where his pitchs are going. Kimbrel has done his for 6 years with great success. He slings it up there and dares anybody to swing at it.
