Poyner gave up a run. He's obviously not ready for this.

Poyner gave up a run. He's obviously not ready for this. He had been absolutely on fire this year. Very clean delivery and good location. Sample is small, but impressive.

Ball so far: 6IP 2H 0R 0BB 2Ks Certainly nice WHIP, nice to see no walks, 2Ks aren't too exciting. I haven't given up on him, though. He's still got stuff that can play. It's tough to strike out a lot of guys when you average 3.2 pitches per hitter. He gave up 10 ground balls, 4 line drives, 2 popups, and one OF fly ball, which is very good. It seems like he was getting grounders at will. Or at Yoan (3), Mauricio (3), Trey (2), and Nick (1). (The 10th was a hit up the middle.)

That's good for Trey. For context, last year Ball had a 37% ground ball rate ... iirc, A+ ball is usually a little above 50% for a league average, although I don't remember Carolina League specifically. He also gave up 4BB/9 last year, so the no walks is great.
We'll see. Nice start, may not mean anything long-term, but he's still got stuff.

Looks like Benintendi is still an absolute beast who is completely underwhelmed by his competition. I'll just pray he goes 0/0 tomorrow with 4 or 5 walks so his hitting streak ends, thereby also ending any (il)logical reason why he's still with Salem. Or maybe they're just waiting for him to hit a homerun so they can cross out "Never hit a homerun in A+" from his resume. Cross off home run.
ADD: No (il)logical reason now!

Ok so if Tango says "A line drive is like a walk, an infield fly is like a strikeout, and the gap between an outfly and a groundball is about one-fourth the gap between BB and SO" or (geekified) (((11*((BB+LD)-(K+PU)))+(3*(FB-GB)))/PA)+C (of 4.62) then Trey Ball's bbFIP, using eric's numbers, was ... 3.27

BA's prospect report on Ball's outing: Trey Ball, lhp, Red Sox. Once ranked the No. 89 prospect in the game, Trey Ball has regressed the past two seasons. He had trouble missing bats and finding the zone in 2014-15. But on Friday—in just his second start of the season after knee surgery in February—the tall, thin lefthander pitched six scoreless innings for high Class A Salem. Ball struck out two, allowed only two hits and walked none in a tidy 61-pitch effort against Winston-Salem (White Sox). Ball, the No. 7 overall pick in 2013, has seen his stuff back up since he was an Indiana prep star. But he started using a slider more late in 2015 because the curveball was inconsistent, so perhaps that adjustment will bring him back on track.Read more at www.baseballamerica.com/minors/baseball-america-prospect-report-2/#TFRHiYhs6XhhKpxv.99

Was there a tape measure on this one? I know the GS the other day supposedly went 448 feet.

Looks like Benintendi is still an absolute beast who is completely underwhelmed by his competition. Pass on the promotion to Portland. Fast track forward to Fenway! Lodge this luminary in Left!
