Papi hittin' bombs and Wright dealing. Toss in a JBJ 2-3, a Bogey fisted blast, and the continuation of Pedey's "I'm still an elite player" tour, and after Friday's ripoff and yesterday's silly mess, the Sox leave NY with a smile, if not the sh**-eating grin we'd all hoped.

Wanted that shutout for him.
Spectacular outing regardless. Great win.

Wright for Cy Young, BELIEVE. One step at a time. Let's start with an All-Star game appearance this year. As the starter.

For those of us who have always believed in Steven Wright, this early season run has been incredibly gratifying.

Wright was fantastic tonight.
Yankees really struggling with the dancing knuckleball.
So good to see him get some run support.

It's early, sure, but Wright just looks different from other knucklers. He throws harder, like Dickey, but the break looks sharper and shorter, too. Maybe it's a trick (I haven't looked at this), but it seems like he'd be more consistent and have better control of the pitch the way he does it.
But, then again, he might just be on a hot streak.

I'd feel a lot better if Friday's game wasn't stolen from us but I guess we'll have to take it. Half a game out of first on May 9th, great position to be in after a tough road trip.

Seriously. Today was my birthday.
And I was too busy to watch the game! But I just looked at the game log, it's on my DVR, and I think I'll watch the whole thing tomorrow as a belated gift to myself.

If Pedroia is right and it helps turn Price around, the Sox could be very strong. I don't expect Wright to be as consistently great as he's been, but he's certainly a keeper in the rotation and it means a lot less Joe Kelly. And needless to say, he's been a life saver in the pitching rotation. I thought he'd be a decent major league pitcher (like a good mopup man/fill in starter), but I didn't see this.
Ortiz is simply amazing. I don't want to see the Sox go after a quick fix like Encarnacion or Bautista this offseason, but without him in the lineup, it'll look vastly different. In time I'd expect further maturation from Bogaerts and Betts, and at some point Moncada and Benintendi will make their impacts felt, but it'll be tough to replace what Big Papi has given the Sox the past 14 seasons. He's ageless. He has a real chance, if he stays healthy, to whack 40 plus homers in his final season - at age 40! That's ridiculous.

Yea, this final act for Ortiz is a little different than Derek Jeter on his last legs. He's clearly one of the best hitters in the sport still. They should honestly workout a contract for him next year that allows him to start playing in June.

Looks almost like Steven Wright is starting to figure out how to warm up so that he has his best knuckleball available from pitch #1. Could be a CG today. Do you believe in jinxes? Good for you. Also, **** Brett Gardner.

Anyone else notice in the dugout shot after Papi's first (I think) HR, Christian Vazquez was wearing his catcher's mitt? Dude wasn't even playing. Wonder if he wears it to bed. What a freak.

I saw that, he almost looked perplexed. Knowing him though, he probably had his full gear on as well, just in case he has to warm up the pitcher in between innings while Hanny gets his gear on. I do wonder if he can catch the Knuckler.

I do wonder if he can catch the Knuckler. He's caught quite a lot of knuckleballs over at McCoy Stadium.

The most impressive thing for me from the first of Wright's outings, has been the amount of control he has over that silly pitch. That was mentioned over and over again on the broadcast last evening. A 7/1 K/BB ratio is great for someone who throws without the kinks, let alone a knuckleball pitcher. There was an interesting aside with Wright on ESPN during the game, where he mentioned having a discussion with one of the old masters, might have been Phil Niekro, who told him it is possible to gain control of the strike zone with the pitch. He seems to have taken that to heart. For whatever reason, his pitches seem to make their break just as they arrive in the zone. The amount of flailing and weak contact always amazes me.

Ever play catch with someone who is throwing a knuckle ball? Your first reaction is "stop that!"
I was playing right field one day in high school. A guy hits a line drive right at me. I'm standing there waiting for it when, all of a sudden, it stopped spinning. Whoops. The damn thing started dancing so I took a wild ass guess of where I should catch it. I was wrong. That was back in the days of the small glove, so you had to be perfect and catch with 2 hands. Just like Bob Youker said, you wait for it to stop rolling, then pick it up. Rats

Another thing with Wright is that he can dial his fastball up to like 85-88 or so. Having his hard knuckle, being able to throw it at different speeds, and having a fastball several MPH faster than Jered Weaver's certainly doesn't hurt. And he has a curveball too, correct?
