I am really amazed at how bad the Yankees starters we face this series have been thus far this year. You have to think that at some point they are going to pitch to their potential. hopefully not this weekend.

Is SA the same as SLG? And can you explain why you feel the 4 and 5-hitters want to have high OBP as opposed to higher slugging or something? Just curious, not disagreeing. I'll do a little practical philosophy of batting orders when I get a chance. A short answer is that Bradley and Shaw already seem to have heart-of-the-order SA or SLG (yes, same thing) but need to up their OBP to be the overall hitters that would make them ideal for the 5 hole (the #5 hitter often leads off the 2nd inning and sets the table for the Shaw types who hits 6th and 7th). But JBJ is good enough right now. You almost never have a perfect fit for each slot. And here is the wRC+ of everyone but Hanley since JBJ became a regular last July 29: 187 Ortiz (186 last year, 188 this year) 140 Pedroia (141, 139) 133 Bradley (137, 125 and rising) 131 Betts (153, 93 unlucky) 129 Shaw (123, 142) 122 Bogaerts (121, 124) 092 Holt (83, 111) Since Hanley's career wRC+ is 129, it's quite possible that Xander is currently the 7th best hitter on this team. Which is a scary thought for the opposition. And man alive, reports of Pedroia's demise as a top-5 hitter were exaggerated.

Totally agree on the idea of swapping Holt and Bradley; it's almost too obvious. I also agree that Xander is profiling as a leadoff hitter (although perhaps too facile, the Jeter comparisons, both good and bad, are too enticing to ignore), especially if this spike in walk rate is real. And given his baserunning, which isn't Mookie-level, but is still elite But I can't see hitting Betts 3rd at the moment. He has a 293 OBP and a 93+. All of the talent is there, but he seems confused for now. And I don't think it's all BABIP bad luck (even though I'd like too); if he continues to eschew walks (and yes I know he's just come off a 2 BB game), then he has to be moved out of the leadoff spot at some point. But where to? Yeah, if you wanted to make a move now, I think you'd do this: Bogaerts Bradley Pedroia Ortiz Ramirez Shaw Betts catcher Holt Tell Mookie that he's hitting cleanup as soon as he gets it going, but in the meantime he can take some pressure off himself. Once he does, you go X, Pedroia, Ortiz, Betts, Bradley, Ramirez, Shaw, catcher, Holt.

Jordan's Furniture has to be PO'd that the Yankees have already ruined their "Yanks/Sox ALCS and you get your money back" deal. The promo made no sense.

So the Yankees are favored tonight (even if by the slimmest if margins). Am I missing something?

Steamer still likes Pineda, and the Yankees are home. It makes enough sense.

I think sports books may be overrating the Yankees. They also had the Yankees favored to beat the Orioles (on the road) with Tillman on the mound.

FanGraphs only gives us 48.2% tonight and there are no bettors involved there. Perhaps because ZiPS has figured out that Porcello's ERA is always gonna be a lot worse than his FIP?

Ignore the bookies at your own peril. Their record is pretty good. Those buildings in Vegas weren't built on being wrong.
Also, one series late, but that last win was thanks to a rested pen. I think innings pitched by starters is the most under rated stat in the game.

I suppose you could have a lineup of: Pety X Papi Hadley Shaw Mookie Jr. LF du Jour C du Jour Looks solid to me. Papi loves hitting 3rd and it takes the pressure to get on base off Mookie. Except Petey hates batting lead-off. I do like the idea of moving some guys around. I like either Mook or Xander in the lead-off spot, and I like either Pedroia or Betts hitting second. Love Papi third, with Pedroia or Ramirez fourth. Then you either go Shaw then Mook, or Dustin/Hanley then Shaw. Round it out with JBJ, C, and LF, swapping the last two when a LHP is on the mound. Pedey loves hitting fourth. I'm not sure he's the right choice there, but he's got some stupid career #s in the 4 spot, if I recall correctly. I'm too lazy to look it up.
