Just saw a report that the Dodgers are considering trading Andre Ethier. He is making big $$$, $85M over the next 5 years, not sure he fits into what the Sox are trying to do, and I am guessing the Dodgers will be looking for good prospects and not a salary dump. He would be a great platoon partner to go with Gomes, as his splits against lefties are even more extreme than Gomes' against righties, but it would be an awful expensive platoon as well.
Thoughts?

If the Dodgers were willing to eat $5 million per year and take only John Lackey in return I would think about it. And then I would still say no.

Either would be the perfect platoon partner for Gomes, so if they ate enough of his salary to make him cost the Sox what a platoon player should cost, and they didn't want any top prospects for him, then I might be okay with it. Other than that though, no thanks.

While they may be spending like a drunken sailor this offseason, I can't see the Dodgers kicking in much to purge Ethier from the roster. If their objective is to sign Swisher, that's a lot of money for two players going forward. The Dodgers would already be at about $260m in payroll.

I think we could get Swisher for cheaper across the board. Cheaper in yrs, avg value and cost to acquire him. It would suck losing the second round pick but LAD would not give Eithier away.

Ethier is a pretty good player and would be a good addition to any lineup. However, there are several knocks that make it unreasonable for this team to get him. Some of these wouldn't matter on their own, but when added together they factor in:
1. 17M/year for the next 5 years.
2. Plus, it would cost prospects in return (no chance the Dodgers dump salary - which means they aren't eating salary and not getting prospects in return nor would they take little in prospects just to save some $$)
3. He's going to be 31 this coming season - for the entire season - not bad for 3 years, but bad for 5 years.
4. He seems to get injured fairly regularly (although his games played are too bad for his production)
5.. He seems to be streaky, however, last year he seemed to be less prone to big streaks/slumps.
6. Can't hit LHP - which is normal for LHH, but at 17m/year he should be able to handle it better than he does.
He's one of those guys, I'd love to have, if someone hadn't over-paid him on a long deal.

You left out that he's a horrible outfielder.

No thanks. Good (but not very good or great) hitter. Pretty bad defensively. Way way way overpaid.

Let's face it - if he wasn't Pedroia's buddy, would we even consider this? I'm not commenting on this thread in particular, but for a mediocre, overpaid player, it's quite strange how often his name comes up as a potential Red Sox trade target.

Call me crazy but I dont want to spend over $15M for a guy with a 120 wRC+ and horrible defense who rightfully would platoon with Gomes.
