Alex Speier @alexspeier Michael Chavis, out since April 23, will not need surgery for his left thumb ligament sprain. He's resumed baseball activities.

After his demotion, I fear every Keith Couch is like a new Radiohead album: enjoy 'em while it have 'em.

From Speier's 108 stitches:
Righthander Michael Kopech, whose start of the season was delayed by a broken bone in his pitching hand incurred in a fight with a teammate, has been throwing in Fort Myers and will start working off the mound in the near future.

Josh Ockimey continues to toy with Low-A pitchers. Homerun number 7 of the year.

The Curveball was apparently very obedient tonight in GVL.

Josh Ockimey 2/4 with HR, double and one walk. Now 2nd in OBP, 2nd in SA, and 1st in OPS in the SAL. He was 1st in BB% going into tonight. The sample size is 126 PA, and combined with reports on his work ethic and makeup, I think that's now big enough to declare this a major breakout. I have him 14 in the system right now.

Future trade bait with Phils. His HS is minutes from Citizens Bank. Just kidding. One thing I like about guys like Mookie and Ockimey is that scouting dept. wasn't shy about signing a couple of African-American kids out of hs. In areas we don't normally draft. Like it much more than the polished suburbanite.

After the same amount of PT: 127 PA, .310 / .378 / .619, 23 SO, 11 UBB, Head 126 PA, .303 / .452 / .616, 28 SO, 25 UBB, Ockimey The difference in BB rate and OBP is beyond massive. Once FG updates their stats I'll look for guys who had similar years in low-A in 120 or more PA.

Miles Head came from Georgia. When drafted he was advertised as a very polished HS bat without great upside. Sometimes he overswung because his raw power was just above average. Josh Ockimey came from Phil and was never thought as polished while he has plus-plus power. He already has improved the strike zone judgement. I still think Ockimey is raw. There is a balance issue. But I can't ignore his huge ceiling.

But I can't ignore his huge ceiling. Yeah, the scouting reports were very different. Ockimey is 20, he has a 194 wRC+ and a K% - BB% of less than 1.0 (.222, .214). I'm going to look for low-A hitters who had 120 PA, and a 180 RC+ at ages 21 and younger, 2006 (as far back as they go) to 2016.. Brendan Rogers is 195 this year at age 19, but is .146 K rate, .077 BB rate. Oscar Taveras was 191 at age 19 in 2011. .150, .092. Jordan Schafer was 188 at age 20 in 2007. .214, .107 (and was ranked #25 by BA after he was promoted to high-A after 145 PA and had a 122 wRC+. He was a 3rd round pick who had done nothing previously, but he was also repeating the level.) Kala Ka'Aihue was 202 at age 21 in 2006. .227, .187.

Another thing I love about Ockimey was that he wasn't on the radar of BA or PG going into the draft (or at least was unranked among their massive lists). A true 'find' by the sox scouting department. Come to think of it, the Sox have been pretty successful in finding gems with little fanfare prior to drafting or international signing. Betts and Dubon were also unranked by major publications, I think Vazquez had relatively little buzz, and we all know Xander's story.
