How do you improve the Red Sox

Post by pedrofanforever45 on Jun 17, 2016 4:27:11 GMT -5
Pretty ticked off that the Sox are keeping Eduardo in the rotation at the moment. Wish they would build back his strength in AAA. I could live with a couple starts from Buchholz until the all-star break.
Anthony Vavaro should be up soon I think. Doesn't he have a opt out coming up?
So if Eduardo isn't going down, who is? Barnes? Layne Dfa'd?

Oswaldo Arcia was DFA'd by the twins late yesterday.
The Sox should claim this guy. The Sox need a left handed outfield complement in LF.

My boy Arcia is up for grabs. I hope we snag him.

It's a no-brainer for me. 115 wRC+ vs RHP in his career. Fits the team like a glove.

My boy Arcia is up for grabs. I hope we snag him. One of the things I've wondered about is will the Sox make the smaller less splashy moves with Dombrowski as GM. We know he knows how to make decisive big moves, whether you agree with him or not, but I wonder if he'll really be a tinker around the edges kind of guy, like Theo was. Theo was always trying to upgrade the roster, including the #24 or #25 spot, etc. Arcia would be one of those types of moves. Let's see if he goes bargain hunting.

My sense (or more likely hope) is that Dom will be pretty hesitant to trade the big 4. I don't believe he had that type of talent in Detroit's system in any given year. It was easy to trade prospects if they aren't top shelf guys. Trades are so fickle. You can easily be trading the next Betts or Bogaerts for the next Shelby Miller.

What I'm wondering is will he tinker around the edges, like picking up an Arcia and trying him out for a little while? I'm talking little type moves, perhaps like the Janssen signing

Just curious, since another member mentioned moving Hanley if possible; how does a play like we saw the other night when Xander bounced a throw to him and he couldn't scoop it, affect his statistical evaluation? It'd be an interesting real-world example for someone like me, who doesn't know the in depth stuff about advanced metrics. I look at that play and say, damn, it's an error on Xander, but if we had a guy like Napoli in his prime there it's a good chance that the ball is caught, inning over and game still tied.

Hanley dropped that ball because he violently "swiped" at the ball. The ball kicked out of his glove due to centrifugal force. Look @ Chris Davis, last night (or the game before, I can't remember) he made 2 in-between hop catches @ 1st with soft hands & not wildly swiping at the ball.

UZR does not include it. I'm pretty sure DRS tracks 1B reception of throws, under the Good Fielding Plays category.

Even if we played in a neutral park, he would be a downgrade to Young vs. RHP. He projects to bounce back to a unregressed 113 wRC+ vs. RHP, but as a -15 defender that's the equivalent of 93. Young projects to be an 89 wRC+ which is 94 with his +4 defense. Once you regress Arcia's big splits to the mean for SSS, Young has the edge (even if you also regress his defense a bit). Once you add in Fenway, he has a big edge.

I saw Jeremy Hazelbaker was sent down to AAA. I wonder if the Cardinals can use Layne or Varvaro. Maybe Jose Vinicio. I know Jeremy has cooled off, but he is a LHH OF. Something our ML & AAA depth are lacking.

1) Trade Tommy Layne, Josh Rutledge and a nominal PTBL to the A's for Danny Valencia, and select Varvaro. The A's can actually use Layne as a LOOGY and are likely to get something interesting for him at the deadline. Rutledge gets to start for at least a few weeks for the A's, and on the off chance that part of his offensive improvement is for real, maybe they can get something for him, too. There's no downside to that for them. The trade is still lopsided until ...
2) When Josh Reddick is healthy, complete the trade by acquiring him for any combination of prospects excluding the big 4, Travis, Kopech, Chavis, and Ockimey. Beane can't expect to get a potential middle-of-the-order bat or top-of-rotation starter for two months of Reddick, and no one else will be offering one, either. And you don't sell low on the injured Travis when he may still be part of our 2017 plans. But there's plenty of talent that should interest him: Johnson (whom I'd be reluctant to deal, but maybe that's what it takes), Lakins, the Basabes, Dubon, Longhi, Ball, and so on.
3) Try to get JF to use the bullpen smartly. They're the best in MLB at figuring out when to attempt a SB; why should they be so god-awful at figuring out which relief pitcher to use?
4) Monitor the pitching situation while giving Buchholz and Elias a chabce to solidify the last two rotation spots.

Valencia's going to require a real prospect (albeit a B-tier prospect). He's played really, really well the last few seasons and still has a year of below-market team control left. Reddick will be one of the better players available in the league-- no chance guys like Lakins and Dubon are going to be enough to get him.

Reddick will be one of the better players available in the league-- no chance guys like Lakins and Dubon are going to be enough to get him. And that's where it will be almost impossible for the Red Sox to make any real deals at the deadline unless it's for a De Aza type without giving up one of the big 4. And there's no way I'm moving any of them with the current prospect cost of trades.

Since last July 31 (approximately 120 games), the Red Sox have out scored their opponents by almost 150 runs; their "expected" winning percentage is over .600.
They have a team OPS of .833; their opponents have had an OPS of .711; this is easily the best differential in the league. That .711 OPS against is fourth in the league and only .009 behind the leaders, Cleveland, suggesting that the pitching should improve at some point .
When you recognize that the five best teams in the league will make the playoffs and that winning the division only increases your odds of being champions by about 6% (from 6.25% to 12.5%), it really doesn't make a lot of sense for this team to trade a significant portion of its future right now.
There aren't five teams in the AL as good as the Red Sox; the odds that the current roster outperforms the rest of the league the rest of the way are higher than the odds of acquiring a player who elevates the team's performance in a measurable way, and a ten team playoff is pretty much a crapshoot for everyone no matter how scary that one game playoff is.

While CY has done a good job as a stopgap in left, I think most would agree that he is best utilized as part of a platoon. The name that comes to mind for me as the LHH is Choo in TX, who is owed 20ish mil/year thru 2020, meanwhile Rua, Desmond, and Mazara have performed admirably in the Texas OF thus far. If the Rangers are willing to accept a couple low tiered prospect/40 man filler (maybe Kelly?) in exchange for Boston paying 70-80% going forward, would either side have a qualm? Texas is looking to get younger but is in the competition for sure, that $ can be used to sign maybe 2 of Odor, Profar, Mazara etc. long term. I'm not going to pretend to know enough about Texas' farm to know what position they might be more inclined to take a flyer on. Choo is a .900 ops v RHP and he seems like a good fit for Fenway LF (not great range, strong+accurate arm). Would Texas demand more value even with the salary relief?
(BTW long time reader, had an account before the site change. Love checking up on the MiLB guys and SP makes it so easy)

The Red Sox don't want Choo and 70-80% of his salary.

The Red Sox don't want Choo and 70-80% of his salary. I meant Texas picking up that amount, apologies. Would the full amount of Choo's contact be enforced on the original team's books, or how does that work re: luxury tax?
