Brentz and Louisville with solo HR's. 1-1 middle of the 5th.
Hope we have Chaz or Ian there for reports on HO. Interesting night so far. 5K's no BB's and 5H after 5 innings. He and Elias are battling for the next shot at the 5th starter. I think Elias has the inside track, though.

Devers with a great diving play on a smoked one-hopper to his right, top 2. Beeks has 6 misses on (edit:) 16 swings. Batboy wearing Dubon's uni just stole second.

Every single time we have someone watching Devers, he's making great plays in the hot corner. I hope those concerns about him being unathletic and has to move to 1st (or even DH) are put to rest.

Longhi goes very yard. Beeks showing some giddyup, wish I had a gun.

Mr. Anderson through 4: 4K's no BB's, just 2H. 4GO/0FO. Seems to be back on track after last time out.

First hit off Beeks a broken bat IF hit to SS. Now up to 14 swings and misses, 4K.

Beeks very nicely athletic on bunt down first. Obviously on the relief track, pitching out of the stretch and largely going FB, change.

Chavis is 3 for 3. Would be nice to see him pick up where he left off and have a great season

Moncada's apparent sac bunt ruled foul, he walks on the next 3 pitches, Dubon bunts right to P, they have the force at third, 3B drops throw. Meyers fans, Longhi GDP nicely turned.

I know it's not a great stat but, the error he made today was only his 4th error this year. More than decent for a young guy.

Devers average back down to .223. Seems like he is only hitting bad pitching when he hits. I know he is young.

Saw him live vs. Potomac for a series a few weeks ago, he looked spectacular. Will see him again in Salem this week. Missing Ball again which is annoying

Devers is soooooo underrated at 3b. He has made all plays at 3b along with some jaw droppers. Tonight was a throwing error which is very very rare for him. He's a lot more athletic than people think.

He's hitting .351 with an OPS of .835 over the last 16 games. I mean sure, he hit .180 in the first 40 games, so SSS, but he seems to be adjusting as the season progresses. He's one of 3 19-year-olds with qualifying at-bats in the Carolina league. Gleyber Torres has been great with the Cubs, Jomar Reyes the other with the Keys has been pretty bad. Hell, there are only 7 total guys in the league that are under 21 currently

Look at mredsox89's post just before yours. It pretty much answers your question.
He might be stuggling bit, but not much. Especially if you look beyond batting average. Also, his BABIP is low and his K% is below average and his BB% is above average.

First hit off Beeks a broken bat IF hit to SS. Now up to 14 swings and misses, 4K. How lucky was that? The hitter, Downes had missed on all five of his previous swings. I unfortunately didn't have time to re-read the Beeks scouting report before I left, otherwise I would have tried to shoot some video. And that's because I thought his mechanics looked a lot better than the scouting report suggests; pretty well balanced, smooth, repeatable, un-funky, but with the ball hidden nicely. I'm watching a video from ST, and what I remember from yesterday has less of a leg kick and a bit less of a hook behind. But that could be my memory (and my angle for the arm hook). The scouting report confirms my guess that he was throwing a two-seamer. He was working both it and his change low and away to the RH hitters (which, though I didn't realize it at the time, were all of them!*), and they clearly could not differentiate the spin. He also changed eye level, coming up and in with the 4-seamer. *In defense of my fogged brain, I had been (mostly) shotgun on a 14 1/2 trip to NC the day before, then drove back alone 7 hours to stop off at the game enroute back to Boston. I was temporarily moving my housemate/best friend/ex-wife down there to be with her ill brother ... when the plan was cooked up, I told her I'd try to find something fun to do about halfway home and not too far off the route. Salem playing 3 minutes off of I-95, 7 hours into the 12 hour drive, was pretty much better than I imagined. Ballpark chicken tenders were not good, though.

(Kidding aside, for those wondering, 15 PA, all in 2014)

Two final thoughts from the Salem game:
-- The official scorer made two calls that were at least as mind-boggling as anything we've seen from umps or JF this year. Monge hit a ball into the SS hole, their SS Arteaga went to his right and made a very nice play, but his throw pulled the 1B off the bag and he was unable to swipe the fleet Monge to complete a highlight-reel play. Error on SS. Later, Devers had an entirely routine play, rushed his throw and threw high. Base hit. That play was so obviously an error that I never noticed how it was scored until I read the game log just now. I'd love to see minor league home/road team BABIP splits.
-- Granted, I literally saw Beeks throw the best game of his life (on the first anniversary of his previous best!), but he seems to me to be a Being John Malkovich prospect, which is to say a guy with an unusually small space between his floor and his ceiling. It's still hard for me to see him as a set-up guy, but it would surprise me equally if he doesn't eventually make it to the show. Whether he's eventually Tommy Layne with a milder split and the ability to go through the lineup once (and hence a very useful last guy in the pen), or Tommy Hottovy, remains to be seen.
