I guess maybe I expect too much, but to me, if a guy is going to qualify as a top-notch prospect, at some point he has to start really dominating the level he's at. For example, my judgment is that Moncada and Benintendi were/are playing quite well in Portland, but they aren't tearing the league apart by any means. And Benintendi has shown in a few ways since he's come up that he still has lessons to learn, which is to be expected.
Let Devers in Salem to finish the season and perform in the playoffs. Let's see if he truly is getting his legs under him at high A to the point that he's almost impossible to deal with. Then let him go through the big challenge at AA next year. It may well be that he will be challenged there as well, at least for awhile. He ain't Miggy Cabrera.

Andrew Benintendi is hitting .341 in the major leagues, 14 months after playing for the Arkansas Razorbacks. They both embarrassed the Carolina League. What sort of dominance are you looking for here?

At the beginning I wanted Devers promoted but the more I read here and his age I actually like the fact that he just stays at high A. I believe this kid is the power in the organization and I will wait. I have more faith in him after what happened to him. He starts next year in AA. I cant wait. I envision a home grown lineup first time I ever saw it and its right around the corner.

What sort of dominance are you looking for here? beni no question a top prospect. moncada struggling some with strikeouts in AA, but looking at the rest of the data is very strong to dominating in AA. Devers once he got himself going is dominating at salem. Next step AA and projection is he is a top prospect and will dominate at AA. Groome just starting need to look at him next year at this time. kopech obviously dominating at salem. Projects to do the same next year at AA. Travis out hurt but did verywell and you can say he dominated at AA last year. Got hurt early this year but projects as a top prospect. Johnson inspite of his personal problems has been very strong at AAA. Those are your 1st 7 prospects and rate very high. Basabe 263,chavis 256, and ockimeny 241 all at low A Greenville. Not what I would call dominating performances. Not sure I would rate them as top prospects. I would ask for input here because it looks like Dubon is a top prospect. He is very strong at AA batting 313. Doing a very good job in the field. Lakins is at Greenville with a 6 era, Pitchers are tougher to rate but at this point would not say he is a top prospect. That's your first 12. First 7 appear as top notch. Out of the next 5 the only one who appears strong is dubon. Would ask Jim why dubon is rated below the 4 guys at Greenville. AA is much stronger than low A. Dubon appears to be very strongin AA.

Much better pitching how does the young guy adjust. Does he dominate.

What more did you want from him? As for Moncada, he's hitting .313/.383/.609 against AA right-handers. If they're planning on limiting his appearances in that way because they think it gives them the best chance to win now considering that Travis Shaw is now hitting .231/.295/.417 since May 3, again, what more do you want from him, realistically? (For those curious, Moncada is 5 for 28, 2 2B, 1 HR vs AA LHP with 15 K and 5 BB.) Devers is hitting .330/.372/.532 over his past 304 PA. Over his past 198 it's a stupid .341/.389/.610. He has certainly earned a promotion, but will stay in Salem to play in the playoffs. But again, if that's not domination earning a move up the ladder, I'm really not sure what is.

What sort of dominance are you looking for here? See, I consider .300 + and .900 - .950 OPS quite good in high A. But embarrassing the league? I don't think so. Now when Ellsbury was batting .450 in AA and was unstoppable on the bases, that might have been embarrassing the league. Make no mistake, these are good prospects. But the really elite, elite prospects are in the majors and producing at a top level by this time. I'll wait for judgment on Benintendi until he gets some more experience under his belt. I just think that Moncada and Benintendi have been a little overhyped around here, that's all.

They should convert Workman to a reliever. He's always had problems third time through an order, and he'll never get the opportunity to start in Boston enough to raise his trade value.

I am not one to nitpick; that is to say the difference between good/great/elite is tough to discern (especially given many of us don't really see these guys), but... Beni is in the majors and looking pretty good. Moncada is 21. Devers is a teen. On what team would they definitely be in the majors? If a player is young for his level and outplaying the older competition, surely he falls somewhere on the great/elite spectrum.

Mauricio Dubon hit his 3rd AA dinger. What a great, great season he's having!

Good for Dubon, of course.
But what do we make of Aneury Tavarez? He's stuck down in the bowels of the prospect rankings while raking like mad at AA. Age 24, sure, but that just makes him sort of age appropriate for AA. So could he be a utility OF at the major league level?

Age 24, sure, but that just makes him sort of age appropriate for AA. So could he be a utility OF at the major league level? Tavarez has earned himself a ticket to Pawtucket by his performance at AA. The question, though, is do you put him on the 40 man roster to protect him from Rule 5? I believe it will happen if he doesn't get traded in the meantime while his stock is high.

Mauricio Dubon hit his 3rd AA dinger. What a great, great season he's having! Did not say he was the second coming of nomar. The point was he seems to be doing better than 3 or 4 guys ranked ahead of him and he is at a higher level. Jim/James has provided very good rational for why on different ratings of prospects. So asking the question here. The 1st 7 appear to be excellent prospects after that it is wait and see.

They're currently 5th and 6th in the Eastern League in slugging. Andrew Benintendi is hitting .341 in the major leagues, 14 months after playing for the Arkansas Razorbacks. They both embarrassed the Carolina League. What sort of dominance are you looking for here? See, I consider .300 + and .900 - .950 OPS quite good in high A. But embarrassing the league? But the really elite, elite prospects are in the majors and producing at a top level by this time. I'll wait for judgment on Benintendi until he gets some more experience under his belt. I just think that Moncada and Benintendi have been a little overhyped around here, that's all. Ellsbury's .452/.518/.644 in Portland was to start the 2007 season was a 17-game sample after he'd played 50 games there the previous season hitting just .308/.387/.424 (he was also just 16 for 24 - a poor 67% success rate - on steals), after he'd played another 25 games in the AFL during the offseason, and he was age 23. His career Double-A line (which unfortunately includes 4 rehab games later, but I think we can agree that's a negligible number) is .345/.418/.488 over 71 career games at the level. And like I mentioned, that doesn't include the AFL experience he got in the middle of his time in Portland. Benintendi reached Double-A a year younger than Ellsbury, but we can fudge it and say it's comparable because they both reached the level in their first full season after a promotion from High A. Again, Ellsbury hit .308/.387/.424 in 50 games. Benintendi hit .295/.357/.515 in 63 games. It's not quite exact, but they have different games - Benintendi has more power, Ellsbury was speedier and played better defense. As for the following season, Ellsbury essentially had 75 Double-A level games under his belt as a first-round college pick before putting up that line. Benintendi was called up after 63 Double-A games. I feel confident that while certainly not guaranteed, Benintendi could definitely put up that line if they held him back in Double-A to start next April. If we forget Benintendi's first 50 games and count his final 13, he's .367/.426/.673 in a sample size pretty close to Ellsbury's 2007 time in Portland - note the higher slugging percentage. Moncada, for his part, has just 36 games in Double-A at age 21. He won't turn 22 until the end of next May. It's not even close to being a fair comparison - and Moncada still compares well to Ellsbury's first taste of the level at .287/.366/.559. Both Benintendi and Moncada are performing much better in their first taste of Double-A at a younger age than Ellsbury. This is incontrovertible. And I don't think it's even close that they're both better prospects than Ellsbury was. I think you're being a little unreasonable in what you expect a player to do before receiving a promotion.

Mauricio Dubon hit his 3rd AA dinger. What a great, great season he's having! Really? We're talking about a 22 year old in AA who has generally hit over .300 throughout his minor league career, plays a good SS, stole 30 bags last year and up to 26 this year. He may only have 3 HR, but the fact that he is slugging .500 in Portland is kind of icing on the cake. I'd call it a great season actually.

He's actually played pretty poorly at SS by FRAA unfortunately.
