Here's to hoping Kyle Martin and Chandler Shepherd guide our bullpen to better times. Doesn't hurt to be optimistic. If they aren't up already I can't imagine they're any more ready than guys like Barnes, Hembree and Ross.

I don't understand why some teams don't believe in spending money on a bullpen. Dombroski made one move in offseason Carson Smith. With that pitching motion that everyone said was gonna hurt him. So he put all his eggs in one pitcher. Koi is 41 and Taz who arm I s falling off by the way Farrell uses them. The beginning of the year coming back to haunt the Sox. It's true that after a huge drop in velocity over the course of 2015, one had to do some mental gymnastics to be confident in Carson Smith's health for 2016. However, the addition of Craig Kimbrel (regardless of how you felt about the value given up) had the Sox primed to have one of the best pens in baseball (albeit with some significant injury risk). www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2016-positional-power-rankings-relief-pitchers-1-15/The injury concerns proved true, and combined with bad luck and questionable managerial decisions, have turned this bullpen into a garbage fire. That's as rational an explanation as I can surmise. Or you could argue that if anyone but John Farrell were manager "we'd be up 6 games in the division and confident about the same bullpen." (Somewhere in Framingham, Lou Merloni nods his head...)

John Farrell getaway day. Guaranteed win. Oh, and if they don't it's a homestand loss. In a playoff race. In August. And the second series loss to the same last place team.
But, hey, no pressure.

What a bummer the end of games are for Boston. It's almost predictable at this point. Predictable at this point: A big offensive outburst will be followed by a dead bat game Average pitchers will be elevated to Cy Young level Average batters will be Ruthian and drive a stake into our hearts Travis Shaw will watch strikes go by, swing at who knows what, and be very Drew-like afterward Holaday will end up with important ABs (and fail miserably at them). Ditto for Hill and I didn't even mention the pen or the manager!

Yet they're still 14 games over .500 and leading the first wildcard.

Yet they're still 14 games over .500 and leading the first wildcard. And they easily could be 20+ games over .500 with a big division lead. Perish the thought of Farrell making decisions late in a close wild card play-in game...

Yet they're still 14 games over .500 and leading the first wildcard. Shhh....the sounds you are hearing are the Tigers and Astros closing fast! Last 10 - Boston 4-6 (and they are losing at home!) - Detroit 7-3, Houston 8-2. It's not where the Sox currently are - it is how they are playing - and especially, how they are losing games that they should be winning.

“@sean_McAdam: Ziegler (flu) continues to be unavailable. Won't fly with team to West Coast; hoping to travel on his own by Friday.” Maybe Farrell can stay back with him.....Edit: This is a funny game. We gave up 4 runs in consecutive games. The 1st game we had good pitching, The 2nd game we had horrible pitching. Clay gave up run(s) in both games. If you win a game, like 12-6, it was all around a good game. If you lose 4-3, the pitching/manager, ect was horrific.

Where are you basing that win percentage number from? And the last time Farrell made decisions in a post-season it worked pretty damn great for us.

The whole landscape of bullpens changes with the shortening of the rotation in the playoffs. There will be better options for Farrell at that point. My biggest concern is that one game playoffs are a crapshoot and this team has not been good under pressure. I really want to win the division.

Based on BaseRuns per Fangraphs, the Red Sox should be 81-51 and the Blue Jays should be 76-56. The Orioles should be 66-66.

Apparently, Koji could return from the DL after a few more bullpens without incident. Can't remember where I saw it.

More Wright regression. But let's put Buchholz in the bullpen just when he had it figured out.

LoMo has hit 2 HRs off of us in the past week and the Rays version of Vazquez crushed our souls last night. Feels like rock bottom, yet this is still a playoff team. Bizarre year.

Offense looks like it is pressing again - harmless pop ups with men on base. And as the offense sleeps, Wright is getting tagged. Depressing to watch.
I forgot who said this - Spier? a beat writer? This is a team that seems to often play down to the level of the competition.
