Hope he gets off to a fast start. If he doesn't, he's probably going to lose confidence quickly and be a K machine. He'd still provide value as a baserunner though. Nobody really fits that bill on our roster right now.
An added bonus to this is that we know he won't be rushed up next year. He'll have to stay in Pawtucket until May or the Sox lose a year of control, which Dombrowski isn't dumb enough to do. I think that month (at minimum) will be very necessary for him to learn to make more contact before being thrown to the wolves.

Exciting news.
Vazquez, Kelly, and either Brentz or (hopefully) Castillo should be joining the team as well. I'd expect to see the remainder of the callups when the PawSox season ends, but it's possible Owens comes up now as well, or Cuevas if they're just looking for a body to pitch in blowouts.

Im excited to watch him. Definitely sounds like Farrell wants to play him. Hope he corrects those strikeout issues in the bigs.

Not to put a damper on the party here, but I really dislike this move. Moncada simply isn't ready, especially defensively. An underrated plus that the Sox have gotten from Travis Shaw this season is that he has played an above average defensive 3B. Moncada, while he profiles as a good defender, just isn't there yet. And as a guy who has a 30+ strikeout rate in AA, there is no guarantee that he's even an upgrade over Shaw offensively.
This doesn't even address the service time. I really think Dombrowski is pushing the envelope on this one. In my opinion, Moncada isn't an upgrade over any of our starters right now. And calling him up now, versus June or July of next year (right on schedule) a year of service is lost. Benintendi's AA to majors jump was a rare exception to the rule. Nothing he's shown in AA shows that he's going to be a good hitter in the majors (Steamer has him projected at an 80 WRC+) and his defense is a big step down from Shaw, Hill, Holt or anyone else we could play at 3B.

Steamer's 80 is a pre-season projection. PECOTA projects him at a .270 TAv (weighted mean) the rest of the year, after projecting him at .235 pre-season. His projection from the left side would be better than .270, obviously. They have Shaw at .261. Clay Davenport's MLE's are a bit on the generous side, but they have Moncada as .272 at Salem and .278 at Portland.

I think there is a good chance you are right, but there is also a chance that it takes pitchers a little while to figure Moncada out and he slugs .500 down the stretch and plays good enough defense to be a significant upgrade over what we've gotten from Shaw and Hill.

I mean, the minor league season is about to be over and 3rd base has been a black hole for the Sox for most of the season... what is there to lose? Worst case scenario he's a pinch-hitter off the bench and a useful guy to have on the basepaths with his plus speed. Any amount of time he spends with Papi, Pedey, Hanley, the Bees, etc. is also extremely valuable to have. He'll be playing in Arizona later in the fall too.

Yeah, I'm with Brendan98 on the upside of catching lighting in a bottle, versus the downside risk of...well, injury I suppose. Joc Pederson was a K king in the minors and got hot for a half-season. Javier Baez hit some bombs. Soler looked good for a third of a season when he first came up. Some guys respond well to being challenged. I think it's highly unlikely a call up does any permanent "damage." And Moncada likely will be utilized in accordance with his success. If he struggles, it's a learning experience (and the whole "time with Papi" thing, especially in a playoff hunt, shouldn't be underestimated), and they have plenty of other options with Shaw et al. If he's just OK, he at least adds value as a patient hitter with power and baserunning acumen off of the bench. And if he gets hot, he could be a difference-maker. If he were being asked to be a savior, that's perhaps more risky. But he's just a guy filling a role for now, there's really no pressure.

Where's Guidas? We need to dust off the pope-mobile for when he shows up in the Bronx.

In looking at Moncada's swing LH versus RH in the videos I've seen, it appears to me that in his RH swing, during his load he sometimes wraps his bat further around his head with the top of the barrel going toward the pitcher during his load. That extra move seems to throw his timing off, so he often looks to be "chasing" the ball when he brings his bat through the zone. I see relatively little of this in his LH swing. One noticeable exception to that RH behavior was his swing on his home run in the Futures game. THAT was a crisp, short, one piece swing from his set position through the ball.
I do not have a trained eye for this, but to me it appears that one thing that would improve his RH performance is to get rid of that extra wrap.

Steamer's 80 is a pre-season projection. No it's not. But, as you said, that includes his projection vs LHP, which is likely not relevant.

This weekend we now start the same discussion we had with benintendi. Are they playing him enough/ correctly? Stats vs emotion this should be a fun/interesting conversation.

This weekend we now start the same discussion we had with benintendi. Are they playing him enough/ correctly? Stats vs emotion this should be a fun/interesting conversation. The difference with Benintendi was that there was an alternative. Calling Benintendi up and then not starting him for that first week was weird, because they had the option of getting him at bats in minor league games. There are no minor league games that Moncada would be missing by sitting on the MLB bench, so even if he's a four-time-a-week starter he's still getting more reps than he would have otherwise.

You just started the discussion. If he starts out hitting like beni why is he not playing every day. Does he play second and give pedy a rest? Does he dh and give papi a rest? If he makes errors at 3rd do we sub him out late in games or stop playing him at all? Farrell and Moncada will be under a microscope every game. It will be fun to see how it plays out. I am from the school that says he should not have been called up, but see the logic for it. Hopefully it works out for the kid and the sox.

Do they lose a year of service for doing this now? No, it changes nothing except starting the options clock since he'll be added to the 40 man. Baring a major injury, that shouldn't be a concern. The main question is not whether he's here now, the main question is if he's on the 25 man when the Sox break camp next spring.

Yup, the (R) indicates rest of season, where I remembered (RoS) as the indicator. In any case, it's so out of line with what PECOTA and Clay Davenport have (which is why it made sense that it was a pre-season projection) that I'm very skeptical of it. Great article today at FG on him.
