I think it is telling that my first reaction is that DD will be overpaying on prospects. He just seems to care little about preserving them/winning a trade when he makes up his mind on filling a need. I hope I'm wrong.

Hopefully this is Tyler Thornburg. He'd make perfect sense.

Well Thornburg would be a nice addition, but it would take a bit to land him. The Sox do have assets, players like Hernandez, though that would be just the start I think.

Travis Shaw and Josh Pennington in the deal to Milwaukee. Has to be Thornburg, right?

Pennington is one of the guys going to Milwaukee.
Edit: And Shaw? Wasn't expecting that.

Travis Shaw and Josh Pennington in the deal to Milwaukee. Has to be Thornburg, right? In your dreams. They gave up way more than that.

Shaw, Dubon, Pennington for Thornburg.
No issues with this at all. Thornburg is very good, cost no money and will give another big arm in the pen.
Now can focus on adding a bat and DH. Subtracting Shaw opens up a spot.

Subtracting Shaw opens up a spot. I knew it. If they wanted Thornburg last season at the deadline they would still have to give up way more than this!

Fastball velocity has increased the last couple of years to the 94-95 range but also has a partially torn UCL that was treated with platelet injection(s) a couple of years ago I believe.
He had high strikeout totals last year following more average ones previously. It appears that he would be a significant improvement over Taz assuming he does not have injury issues.

High cost, but I don't mind it.

This reminds me of the Kimbrel trade, in that why are those extra pieces moving in only one direction? Dubon and Shaw should've been plenty to get Thornberg - if they're going to hold it up for Pennington, get another piece coming back that your scouts like as well.

Anyone else feel like this is a player too much (Pennington + Doubon or Shaw seems right). Seems like lot for a reliever, esp one who has had elbow issues in the past.

I feel like this is a lot to give up for a reliever, especially one with a relatively short track record of success. Having said that, I'm not going to lose sleep over anybody we gave up. Two low-ceiling prospects and a 3B who had lost his job down the stretch last year (though he 'won' it back when Moncada clearly wasn't ready yet).
I'm watching that 3B position with some concern right now though.

Probably an overpay, but it's not like the Sox are giving up any huge pieces. I just hope he doesn't end up like one of the many relievers who came to Boston and then got hurt or played terribly (Bailey, Melancon, Hanrahan, Smith.)

Dubon is the only player who I really think about in this package. We saw what Shaw is and it's very replaceable and Pennington is not a player you consider holding up a deal for a guy if you really like him. Hard straight fastballs get eaten for lunch.

Dubon seems like he could've been a 3rd or 4th guy in a much bigger trade package for a much better player.

Why not just throw in Betts as well? The superannuated Dombrowski needs to go; it's sickening
