www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/02/yankees-president-dellin-betances-arbitration-filing-had-no-bearings-in-reality.html?fv-home=true&post-id=85774Dellin Betances loses his arbitration hearing, and will earn 3M instead of 5M. Now, Yankees president Randy Levine is trashing Betances over his 5M requested salary. I don't see the sense in this at all. I agree that 5M was probably too much, but what could they possibly have to gain from saying this stuff to the media? “It’s like me saying, I’m not the president of the Yankees, I’m an astronaut. I’m not an astronaut and Dellin Betances is not a closer,” Levine adds. What??? The SSS he had as their closer should mean nothing. He was still 3rd among all relievers in war, 15+ k/9, FIP below 2. If they don't think he's worth 5M, fine. But I don't see how anyone could say he hasn't been one of the best relievers over he last 3 years, and It seems ridiculous to trash a player that valuable to their team. Another quote from Levine: Bryan Hoch @bryanhoch Randy Levine said that Dellin Betances' $5 million request might as well have been $50 million. "He doesn't have the stats." Not a good look at all. And now you have this: Bryan Hoch @bryanhoch 55m55 minutes ago "You look at it a little differently now. I think (free agency) will be a little easier when the time comes." - Dellin Betances

And this is why it's not a great idea to go to arbitration.

To really get a feel for how "special" Levine's attack is, take a look at the usage pattern for Betances over the last month. Here's the summary for that time period (click to expand): He ended up throwing 213 pitches over 9.1 innings. Twice he pitched 3 days straight. For all the talk about what a great manager Girardi is, this is inexcusable. Attacking the guy is just poisoned icing on a very bitter cake.

The arbitration process is dumb. It's heavily based on precedent, which means it's stuck in the era that values raw save totals much more than other metrics which more closely correlate to team success.
Randy Levine is also kind of an idiot.

There's no doubt in my mind that the Yankees will trade Betances at some point in the next 2 years, I thought this before all the comments the Yankees made but this pretty much cements it.
Why would you ever come out and "trash" one of your best players?

Why would you ever come out and "trash" one of your best players? When they signed Chapman it was pretty obvious that they didn't have faith in Betances as their future closer. And that's fine. But for an organization's president to come out and criticize a player like he did is totally unnecessary. It almost comes across as, "How dare he ask for that much money! He has insulted us! So let's go to the media and put him down as best we can!"

Randy Levine is a classless arrogant jerk so his usual haughty attitude doesn't surprise me. He was always one of George's most nastiest underlings. He's the whiny baby who started pouting when the Red Sox lingered on the field in Yankee Stadium. He wanted to turn the lights off on the 2004 Red Sox. Fortunately, in a show of great class, George told him No, leave the lights on for as long as they want it.

Good interview with a knowledgeable guy: Burke Badenhop, now with the AZ operations staff. He was brought on by the ex-Sox braintrust now running that FO. They'll be interesting to follow this year. I'm of the opinion they sold high on Segura, high enough to pry Walker loose. I'll be shocked of that doesn't turnout to favor the D-Backs. www.fangraphs.com/blogs/burke-badenhop-on-joining-d-backs-as-baseball-ops-analyst/

I don't know how long it's going to last, but I'm going to really enjoy seeing the Sox have three quality starters in Eduardo Rodriguez, Pomeranz, and Wright battle it out for rotation spots. All this while the Yankees have to resort to names like Jon Niese to possibly fill in for their questionable at best rotation.

Somebody always gets hurt. While the Yankees are wishing they had Henry Owens May 15th we'll be sitting pretty.

Intentional walks will now be a signal from the dugout rather than 4 wide ones.
Caution, don't get yourselves stampeded at the ticket counter.

I think Walker still has a big leap to make. His HR issues are real, but I think he tweaks his arsenal/fine-tunes his location and becomes a TOR guy. I also think Segura had a career year, and while I wouldn't be surprised if he's much better than his prior years, I don't think he's a regular 5-WAR player.

Did they screw up on Quintana not signing him or was he a fallback option if they couldn't sign Groome?

This is a team that somehow gets the Aaron Small's and Shawn Chacón's of the world to give quality starts. I fully expect Luis Cessa to be in the Cy Young discussion by the trade deadline.

Many consider Luis Guillorme the best defender in the Mets' entire farm system. Need proof? He just. Did. This. . . . lol and now it's being retweeted all over the place.
