With the Kimbrel news, let's check in on the guys Boston traded for him:
-Manuel Margot doesn't have an extra base hit since April 14. .172/.226/.172 over 94 PA. Oof. -Logan Allen has a 3.42 ERA in his last 10 starts. A couple clunkers in there, but he's been pretty good in a PCL that's been even more hitter-friendly than ever. His two worst starts are both against Tacoma. -In 48 games in the KBO, Carlos Asuaje has the Carlos Asuaje-est line possible, .253/.358/.370. -Javier Guerra made his pitching debut, going two innings in the California League. He allowed just one homer in two innings at Inland Empire. Who makes a kid debut as a pitcher at Inland Empire? That's worse than making him throw 150 pitches. Anyway, his stuff is pretty intriguing. He is, amazingly, still only 23.

Myles Smith is shoving in the American Association
9.1 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, 2 BB, 20 K’s
He’s throwing strikes...wouldn’t shock me if somebody gave him a look soon with that K/BB

Logan Allen is being called up to make his debut for the Padres tomorrow. He was the one which was most painful to include in the Kimbrell trade for me.

7 IP 3 Hits 0 Runs 2 BB 5 K Good for him but damn it hurts! Craig Kimbrel was the closer for a World Series Champion. It should not hurt at all. You have to give something to get something. Kimbrel's lifetime stats were as good as any reliever including Rivera when the Red Sox obtained him. He had a so-so season in 2016 with an injured finger that messed up his control, a dominant Kimbrel season in 2017, and a strong 2018 regular season. He was definitely a contributor. When the Sox had a lead in the 9th you knew who they were turning the ball over to and for the overwhelmingly most part, as nervous as he could make you, he did a great job protecting his leads. It's a lot more comforting than the Russian roulette they do every night when you have no idea who is going to protect a 4-3 lead in the 9th. You can argue bullpen by committee versus established closer, etc, but that's not the point here. The point is the guy was a contributor to 3 division winners and a World Champion and the Red Sox, when all is likely said and done, gave up a good starter, but one we don't know how good. I have no idea if he's a back-end starter or a top-of-the rotation starter or a mid-rotation starter. I suspect it's mid-rotation starter which sounds about right. If it is, it was still a good deal for the Sox. Margot hasn't really amounted to much and there was a ton of angst about losing him. Guerra is now pitching I believe. His SS days are over. Asuaje is long gone. Allen was barely drafted at the time the Red Sox dealt him. There was a lot of risk from the Padres standpoint in getting him. They made a good judgment on him, but there is a lot of risk of flaming out when a kid is that far away from the majors - isn't that why its TINSNAAP or whatever the hell the acronym is about there being no such thing as a pitching prospect or whatever because of the volatility - and keep in mind early scouting reports called him a #4 type starter. It's almost like it was expected the Red Sox would either get Kimbrel for nothing or find another Koji (as if that happens all the time)to do as great a job as Kimbrel had done and actually did do for the Red Sox. No reason for either team to complain about the deal. It was a fair deal, not a rip-off from either side. Basically the deal was A ball Logan Allen for Kimbrel on a team that was ready to win now and needed a lock-down closer.

Just checked on Ty Buttrey, who was traded to the Angels for Ian Kinsler last year. He's been a steal for the Angels with a 3.35 xFIP over 52IP. Would have probably be an excellent arm for the weak Red Sox pen right now.

I wonder what happened there. Teams usually don't release someone who hasn't played at all while injured. I wonder if he wasn't putting in much effort in his rehab?

Buttrey seemed to air a lot of complaints over the years with how the Red Sox developed him, yes.

Kimbrel Was the biggest opponent the Red Sox faced in their quest to win the WS. I've never been a fan of the dude and I think the Sox would've won the title with or without him.

Whoa! Just realized Brian Brown has been released despite having a solid season with Lowell last year. I know he wasn't a real prospect, but I'm surprised that they would release him without really giving him a chance. Was there an outside factor here? Also Soxprospects now has him as an inactive ex-prospect, but how do they know he won't sign with another team like Behenna and Boyd did?
