It's bad enough when a starting pitcher doesn't get run support, it's twice as bad when he doesn't get defensive support on top of that.
Porcello deserved better last night.

With JBJ back soon this outfield is so good in pretty much every facet of the game. Is there a better OF in the league? Has there been a better OF in the last 20 years? The worst one of the group is Bradley, who gives All-Star level production. Good question.... this is pushing the 20 years but the outfield that immediately came to my mind was the late 90s Angels Edmonds - Erstad - Anderson. Which then became Salmon - Erstad - Anderson in the early 2000s. Once Guerra came in they had trouble getting a third guy to go with him and Anderson. In today's game the closest I can come up with is Miami with Stanton - Ozuna and Yelich... it's pretty damn good and I don't think it would be an upset if they had a better combined WAR than the Red Sox. Edit: The Nationals are up there too, especially with MVP level Harper.

In terms of WAR they could also outpace those teams this year. Trout and Calhoun together are pretty much guaranteed 13 WAR at least and whatever they get from Maybin is a bonus. The Pirates could have had a chance but with Marte's suspension and McCutchen's decline that's out of the question now.

Yeah, Trout will put any outfield in the conversation almost by himself.
The Nats outperforming the Sox would be a little bit more surprising - I don't know that Harper is better than Betts, and Benintendi and Eaton are probably a wash. Werth has been good so far this year but hadn't been since 2014 and he's 38 so that's feeling awfully flukish. I'd take Young over him, never mind Bradley.
The Marlins are interesting too, definitely the only one who can challenge the Red Sox in terms of quality at all three positions.

Digging deeper into the Nationals:
Harper was a 9.5 WAR player two years ago and is already a 1.3 WAR this year. If he has the type of year like he is capable him and Mookie are basically a wash or Harper could even put pace him. But call them a wash.
Eaton was a 6 WAR guy carried a lot by his defense. The major question around him is he's moving back to center from right field. He was a beast in right with the glove but before that he was only solid as a center fielder so that should make his WAR sufffer enough. But if he repeated his 6 WAR season it's a lot to ask Beni to offset him.
The thing is tho I do think any outfield that needs a Super star to carry a less than 2 WAR player should be disqualified. And it's our conversation so we can make the rules.

Not to disrespect guys like Lester and Beckett, but on sheer stuff alone we hadn't seen anyone as good as Sale pitching for the Red Sox since Pedro and it's not particularly close. The stuff he throws is just bonkers.

It his having that combination of stuff and attitude that makes some guys rare.

He rarely has waste pitches and his walks are typically competitive. It's 97 FB's, Wipeout sliders, Plus changes, and they are all hitting the corners.

It's amazing to me that Jarrod Saltalamacchia has only struck out in half of his career plate appearances against Chris Sale.

Chris Sale needs to kick all the batters in the groin and wake them up. Gotta be maddening.

Leon looks horrible vs RHP, might be a little premature but might need to start thinking about a lefty/righty platoon, he has to play vs LHP but he is doing worse against Righties than Panda is vs Lefties, yeah yeah I know SSS but I'm basing this more on how overmatched he looks than just numbers.

It is probable that our guys won't be scoring as many runs this year, but equally probable our guys won't be giving up as much either. If Price can come back to being a # 1/1A type pitcher, you have to like this years teams chances more than last years, all other things being equal (Farrell bullpen mgt, injuries....etc..etc)

Thinking of him as a bonus right now. Need E-Rod and Wright to be solid.

Leon is just not good We need him to play well, though. He can be traded at the deadline for prospects and the Swihart/Vasquez era can begin.

The rest of the team must be thinking "if Sale isn't going to suck his first year in Boston, we'll have to suck for him". Savvy move.
