Sox also announce activations of Pedroia and Barnes. Thinking it through, Elias coming up could signal no Beeks. I'm not sure why Elias even is still on the 40 man, let alone taking a spot over Beeks. He's out of options next year and isn't likely to help this year. Hopefully it's just for a few days. Has anyone seen Elias pitch this year? He has barely pitched and his stats look pretty bad except for a low walk rate.

I'm going to guess that it's the whole "has been a 1-WAR starting pitcher in the major leagues over a multi-year period in the past" that keeps him on the 40-man roster, considering that's a valuable thing. Also, note that he's still going to have an option next year - he was only optioned for like 13 days this year. That's something you can't say about, for example, Brian Johnson.

Yeah, keeping Elias around for another year is only a good thing imo. He's had a lost year but you could do a lot worse when finding starting pitching depth over the winter.

Maybe Farrell is afraid Brentz has so much power he might hurt the feelings of the rest of our lineup excluding Devers?

Listened to Chris and Ian on the podcast and was interested to see some anxiousness re. the roster spots. As the recent consensus has been the Sox lack depth at the prospect level I wonder if there aren't a lot of teams with greater concerns in that area? Of course the Sox do have a number of intriguing "older" players who flash plus potential, isn't it true that any team claiming them must give up a roster spot to do so? In other words the Sox look at Henry Owens and see his swing and miss stuff and wonder if he's worth protecting given his overall performance, but other teams must also decide if he is worth a roster spot.

Different teams have different priorities. A team like Oakland might be more willing to give up a high floor, low ceiling type (think Kyle Martin) for a low floor, high ceiling type like Owens, while the Red Sox need to keep a few of the former around for major league depth. I'm almost 100% sure that Owens gets claimed if he's DFAed.

Maybe an A level prospect. Hembree fits in the same mold.

Hembree is a viable major league reliever while Owens at this point can't throw strikes at any level. He's not close to being a major leaguer.

Agree was not clear with my observation. I was more thinking that you could trade both and get something back. Hembree would draw a much higher level of compensation than Owens. Hembree is definitely a major league player and Owens holds promise.

Somebody will take a flier on him, but the Red Sox would receive nothing of value. For Hembree, he's marginal so the Sox might receive some fringe value which is a lot more than they'd get for Owens. Hembree deserves to be on the 40 man roster and has a reasonable shot at being in the pen next year. As far as Owens goes the question becomes is his presence on the roster blocking somebody who's better? If the answer is yes, then he'll be gone. At this point the odds are very much against him amounting to anything.

It seems like he has fallen behind several people, making maybe 9 th on the list, maybe lower.

If Sox were aggressive, they can DFA Boyer, Chris Young & Martin. Opens spots for brentz smith and BARFIELD. I'd like to see what Barfield can do as DH.

If the Red Sox were serious about Barfield, they'd have promoted him to Pawtucket long ago, IMO. It's not like this is a recent hot streak.

I think they'll activate Smith and DFA Martin.
And there's a very obvious path to add another 40-man spot, that they could use simultaneously for Brentz. You move Price to the 60-day DL. If he comes back, it's going to be as a lefty out of the pen (a role he could be seriously good at in the post-season), and when and if that happens (9/20 at the earliest), it renders future FA Fernando Abad even more useless -- and in the last 20 days, he's pitched 4 times, all in low leverage.
Kyle Martin is somewhere between 4th and 10th on the depth chart for AAA callups next year. He was on the bubble for protection last winter (I argued against it) and he's done less than zero to demonstrate he can pitch in MLB this year. His future in the organization is not worth going without Brentz for the last month.

Alex Speier @alexspeier 17m17 minutes ago Carson Smith will be joining the Red Sox. Anyone else from PawSox? Farrell: 'Nothing to announce'
Well, hopefully they'll announce Brentz tomorrow.

Nick Cafardo @nickcafardo 6m6 minutes ago Dave Dombrowski said IL HR champ Bryce Brentz willl not get callup from Pawtucket. Brentz hit 31 HR but no 40-man roster spot available.
Wow. They sure could use some power even if its coming off the bench.

It's not his roster spot that's being protected -- it's every conceivable PA. Not even a chance to give Brentz a shot if Young is still looking lousy. And, yes, the "no 40-man spot" excuse is weak. Let's see how much value Price adds between now and Sept. 20 (when he would be bale to come off of th 60-man), and, if he returns, how much value Abad adds from then to the end of the season. If that's their plan to activate Smith, then the choice they're making is to keep Martin on the winter roster.

The difference between Boyer and literally every other low leverage pitcher in the bullpen is worth 0 wins at most. Not adding Brentz is just plain stupid and now we have no indication of what he can do in the majors and will probably hit 30 HR for the Rays next year.
