I think the Red Sox miss Brock Holt and I think the biggest hole on the team right now is a back up infielder. San Francisco is falling fast & Nunez will turn 30 in a few days & a free agent at the end of the year. He can play 3B, SS, 2B, & OF, is a good Right Handed hitter with some power and can steal bases. Perfect fit for what is needed on the Red Sox.
What would it take to get him?

He's actually not that good of a hitter -- below average for his career, and with reverse platoon splits: he's 13% below MLB average (via wRC+) vs LHPs, 4% below the average vs RHP. And despite the versatility, he's a rather poor defender at all positions he plays.
Sadly, he'd still be a solid upgrade for our current 3B situation. He's a 1-2 WAR player and a FA after this season -- I don't think he'll cost too much.

Nunez is currently -10 DRS for the year. -3 at 3b, -3 at ss and -4 in of. As good as his bat has been, his D has been just awful. I wouldn't give up a lot for him.

Maybe I'm just being lazy on this because it was the last Red Sox/Giants trade, but something like the return for Peavy makes sense to me: Two relievers from the high minors with limited ceilings. It can be argued he's not worth more than one middle reliever, but DD will probably throw in a couple extra players just because.
Another potential option (certainly not optimal) is Jhonny Peralta. I'm not saying I want him on the team, but he does have some defensive versatility (not that he's a good defender at any of the positions), and he is almost certainly available for very little except maybe a little salary relief. I doubt he would be an upgrade over Rutledge, though (and he may not even be an offensive upgrade over Marrero).

do you pick up Peralta after he clears as a FA or see what 3B you can get for a Ockimey & Buttery or Callahan offer

I'm thinking Ockimey would be a better trading piece with sending Chavis to 1B & getting a 3b can can hit & field !

We just need a stop gap type player until Devers is ready. Which could be later this year or by next year. So I'm not trading one of the better bats in system for a short term fix.
Go get a player like Plouffe from the A's. He's in a major slump right now, but is a decent hitter and plays a good 3B. The cost will most likely be some of our bullpen arms in minors, not Ockimey.

I like Ockimey as a potential DH power 3 true outcomes bat in a few seasons. I'd like to see the Red Sox hold onto his power. I think of Chavis as more of a LF waiting to happen, and he'll be needed by the time JBJ reaches free agency and the Red Sox have no outfield prospects on the horizon any time soon.
If Peralta is available - did he get released? - then the Sox should go after him as a stop gap/insurance policy until Devers is ready.
I wonder what Adrian Beltre would cost to acquire if Texas totally tanks. My guess is too much, but he'd be the best fit for this lineup.

To answer my own question, yup - Peralta was DFA a couple of days ago. Then the Sox should pounce on him. Hang onto the prospects they have left. I'd like to see them call up Devers at some point and have Peralta as insurance, but play Peralta until Devers is ready - perhaps by the end of July or at some point in August?
If Peralta is toast, the Sox could then revisit the trade market if Devers needs more time.

Peralta doesn't have an extra base hit this year and his stats are pretty atrocious at 3B. He might be the only player worse than Pablo.
I'd compare it to picking up someone like Allen Craig.

Is that a scouting report? Statistically the guy has only had 54 ABs and he has a track record of being mediocre, which is a step up. The 54 ABs are too small a sample size for me to rule out, especially with the trade deadline still six weeks away and Devers not ready.

If St. Louis pays 95% of his salary, I'd play him for a few games, but right now, I'd think Rutledge is better considering he has more than 0 XBH and is above replacement level.

Then I guess I wouldn't "pounce" on Peralta. I'm not overly worried about his offense being putrid. 54 ABs is kind of a small sample size and he has managed to be mediocre recently. But I had no idea he was so Panda-like on defense. They need somebody who's not an automatic out who can field the position. Their defense at 3b is atrocious. If Devers isn't ready, then I would prefer Beltre, Moustakas, Frazier, Freeze, Lowrie in that order, but I'd be very scared of what Dombrowski would be willing to give up. Where is GM Dave Stewart when you need him?!

Yea but his stats are good, not atrocious. He was -19.7 UZR/150 last season in 5 times as many innings. Well he didn't hit that bad last year, this isn't last year. His D has varied from year to year almost his whole career. For his career he is minus 10 DRS in 295 games at 3B and he was -7 last year. So last year was much more of an outlier when looking at his career. If you're looking for a low cost option just to try out before deadline at a very low cost he isn't a bad option. If it doesn't work, send him packing.

He played 570 innings at 3B in 2016 and 114 innings in 2017. Before that, his last game at 3B was in 2010. I'm not sure why you'd count that, but ok. He also has a $10 million salary with a $13.25 million cap hit, so the Cardinals would have to pay about 95% of that for it to even be worth the few games that he'd get before he gets cut again. He's also dealing with a lingering thumb issue all year. I doubt it's getting better given that he was just DFA'd and was on the DL multiple times for it.
