I'm fine with the pick. Like drafting a pitcher who has good command. There is upside there as well

So so pick in my opinion, not horrible but Kendall would have been awesome. Kendall went a handful of picks earlier. No the pick right before us.

The guys with some gas have a legit chance at being a useable reliever in the future. Taking people with that so cliche "4 pitch mix" which is cue for no fast ball are mostly relegated to minor league depth when they fail and this team has had many of them over the years drafted in rounds 1-2.

Italics. He's being sarcastic playing off the tone of some of the posters here.

One elite pitch that he can't control.

Kendall went a handful of picks earlier. No the pick right before us. We can't draft the guy picked 5 or 1 spots ahead of us.

In the second round I like either rooker of miss st or deichmann of LSU or knight of Texas a&m.
In the third I am like baumann or Jackson Rutledge.

Houck was the 5th ranked college player by KATOH projections which is a statistical method for predicting WAR. He has had a nice college career statistically speaking.

Forget Houck. What we do at 63 is going to make or break the draft. I need to see some predictions now.

No the pick right before us. We can't draft the guy picked 5 or 1 spots ahead of us. I can't believe they changed that rule

My guess is he signs right at slot and reports to Lowell when he does so.

Didn't John Manuel say that twp years ago Houck was viewed as a possible 2017 No. 1 overall pick? Maybe the Sox can get his delivery straightened out and he could emerge as a starter.

But scouts are still trying to figure out what Houck will be. Some see the delivery and his sinker-heavy approach and see a future one-and-a-half pitch reliever. Others believe he’ll end up as a solid No. 3/4 starter who has enough of a changeup to keep lefties honest while his above-average control and sinkerball beats up righthanders. Who would you have selected instead? Nate Pearson, Bubba Thompson, Nick Allen.

Blue Jays were able to get Warmoth and Pearson. Nice haul by them.

Really, I see it as the Sox wanting both upside (former consideration for top of 1st round draft pick) while ensuring a reasonable floor (as a reliever, fastball could play in mid to high 90s with sinking action). Really, as the #24, this is a totally fine pick.....I'd even call it a good one although I'm curious about Griffin Canning's medicals as he was the only other guy I had ranked ahead of Houck that was still available.

Dan O'Dowd breaking down these pitching prospects always entertains me. No one has a worse track record drafting and developing pitchers than he did.

Does anyone know if we were linked to Houck at all before the draft?
I ask because I assume if we were on him then there is some greater likelihood that they've talked about bonus money and perhaps the Sox are in a position to save some money from the slot bonus.

The Sox are a good team and have been a good team for a year now. They selected at 24. I don't know what people were expecting. Getting a reliever with upside isn't bad.
Selecting Carson Smith redux (minus the slider) is something I'll take any day.
