But why commit to it? Money is money. Makes much more sense to rent a guy because next season, the Sox potentially have Kimbrel, Kelly, Barnes, and a healthy Thornburg and Smith. Robertson becomes superfluous and overpaid.
The Sox acquired a rental Brad Ziegler last year for 2 non-prospects. That's the kind of deal they should be looking for.

I really like Robertson and what he brings. We have no clue what Smith and Thornburg will give us next year. Rather spend money than give up better prospects. Zieger was a gift, very small chance you can do that again.

Robertson has only been worth positive surplus value the 1st year on his contract. Fell short last year and is on pace to fall short again this year. 13,000,000 is way too much for a guy who is a 7th/8th inning guy.
You're right that you can't expect anything from Thornberg or Smith, but even if they don't return to form, the sox could sign a FA 7th/8th inning reliever for much less than Robertson's salary.
