Red Sox miss Santana, which is nice.
Sale vs. Berrios should be really fun to watch. Both work quickly and are good.

Looking forward to game one, well maybe not with the Sox offense going against Berrios.
I wonder if the Sox can score an actual run with Sale on the mound this time.

EDIT: The last team with a 120 WRC+ was the 2003 Red Sox. The last team with an ERA of 121 or higher? The 1931 New York Yankees: www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYY/1931.shtml(Also, good job knowing how to make me look up baseball things when I should be working.)

Okay, let me put it this way then: The Red Sox team leaders rank 64th in MLB in WRC+ (min. 200 PA). That's bad.

The 2003 Boston Red Sox lineup, the good old days. I miss that lineup. The year where the Sox almost won with just offense, and Pedro.

Yeah the offense on the season is pretty middle of the road.
I think the stat you're looking for is wrc+ for the last 30 days, which is 90 and 27th in baseball, last in the AL by a healthy margin.

Okay, it's not that bad in a literal sense, but looking at the players we've got, it's an overall theme of under-performance and that's bad.

When I compare this team to 2013, it's quite a stark contrast. The pitching in 2013, though the stats don't show as particularly stellar, did get hot as the year went on...yet, this year's pitching is going fine as well. It is the offense - the approach, the feel of the games. The 2013 team had a flair for the dramatic and never felt out of just about any game...this team doesn't take an early knock well, and hitting doesn't seem to be at all "contagious" - rallies often end with a GIDP or a base running blunder. The intangible leadership on the 2013 team - Napoli, Gomes, Victorino, Ortiz of course, Ross - hell, even Nava and Carp - the 2017 team hasn't found that mix at all yet.
I am not a stats guy - just a fan - so I am sure numbers could be generated that would disprove some of my assertions. But I watch baseball to enjoy it - I have biases, I probably have distorted memories of how things went.
2013 felt fun wire to wire. 2017 so far feels like a nice car with an engine that knocks. There are some real duds of games sprinkled in with far too few that actually feel "fun".
But here we are, tied for first - it is there for the taking. Now I read we are looking at Sonny Gray. We need offense - we need bats! We need a DH that can hit, and a 3B that is not an offensive black hole.

That's bad. The Red Sox have competent hitters in the 90 to 120 wRC+ range at every position but catcher (where Leon/Vazquez's combined ~80 wRC+ is still more than adequate for the position) and 3B (which, unfortunately, is still a dumpster fire). That's why they're still middle-of-the-road overall offensively despite not having any real standout hitters.

"Lin should definitely get the start tonight vs. the righty." ----------- Done. He's batting 9th.
I don't think it was mentioned yesterday but Moreland made a sensational pick of a hard short-hop by Lin, saving him some embarrassment on what may have been his first ML chance at 3b.
Had Marrero got those two bunts down like he should have maybe he'd be in there tonight. Which tells the young guys that they have to produce...at least with the fundamentals. Mookie Betts RF Dustin Pedroia 2B Xander Bogaerts SS Mitch Moreland 1B Andrew Benintendi LF Hanley Ramirez DH Jackie Bradley Jr. CF Sandy Leon C Tzu-Wei Lin 3B
