That would make sense, but I don't remember seeing these three guys being considered latin as well. Do they speak papiamento and or are from Aruba? Ponson yes. The other two are Canadian. I don't really care if you have a problem because they are *technically* not Latin American or you have a problem with the definition of Latin America. But they are closer to Latin America than Europe. Do you think they are Europeans is that what it is?

Gagné and Bedard are french speakers so they would be more latin by that definition that someone who speaks a latin derived creole.
But that is not the point, the point is the boxes where we put people, many times to belittle them (not in this case).

So far for July two the Red Sox have been connected to Devers, one of the better hitters in the market. Yohan Aybar an OF who is really young and a scout liked him enough to say he was one of the top guys for him. Now Jonathan Diaz a soft tossing lefty that is all about projection. We'll see what happens on July 2.

What has been strangely silent this period is the Asian market and by that? I don't mean Ramirez leaving his Chinese team, but the lack of noise about Taiwanese, even Korean players who could sign come 7/2 and be noticeable as possible good talent.

Baseball America wrote about Jen-Ho Tseng very recently. They noted his stuff was outstanding in 2012, but was less impressive this spring. They speculated about teams who might sign him, but noted that the Red Sox probably weren't interested due to all the discussion about their interest in the high price Latin American players. www.baseballamerica.com/international/taiwans-jen-ho-tseng-proves-tough-to-peg/

Had missed it. Am always more interested in the Asian players (no offense) since traveled to many of the locales in USN days the those places left a very positive and long lasting impression many decades ago.

Aruba is 11 miles from the coast of Venezuela and I've only ever heard Venezuelans referred to as "Latin American" It has nothing to do with "putting people into boxes. It has to do with regions assigned to scouting.

Anyone have a scouting report on Gonzalez beyond what LA Times had? He's pitched internationally so there should be something solid out there.

I just love it that Ben Cherington was the ONLY General Manager present to see him throw. Now lets sign him!

MLB.COM posted their international top 30. Devers comes in at #6. Does it seem that the written comments about each prospect do not necessarily match the ratings of tools (present and projected)? Molina and Devers, in particular, would seem to have more upside based on the text than the rating of their tools on the major league scale.

They did the same thing with their pre-draft ratings. Their write-ups don't seem to line up with their ratings.

The impression I get from MLB.com is that you can't really trust them all that much. I view anything I get from them as better than nothing but not by much.

Speaking of Cubans, and I realize it likely doesn't mean much, but I found it of at least mild interest; 27 year old outfielder Alfredo Despaigne, former home run champion of the Cuban league and arguably the top player in the nation, is currently playing in Mexico.
Please tell me there is something that can be done to bring this man across the border asap

Please tell me there is something that can be done to bring this man across the border asap Sadly he is being leased out by the Cuban Governmnet in a "cultural exchange" with Mexico. It is kind of like how Cuba sends boatloads of doctors to Venezuela in return for oil subsidies. So while he may be more able to defect, if the government decided to do this it would indicate that he is a pretty firm member of the party/ likes his family a lot. I would love to see him and Abreu actually play against legit competition.
