These college starters are usually on pretty tight pitch counts in their draft year as they've typically racked up lots of innings if they've been healthy all year. Pretty sure they're just taking it easy with him

What's considered "a lot of innings"? Houck had less than 95. Fewer than all of his other college years.
If he had made normal 5 inning starts from now to the rest of the year, he ends up with a total of about 150 innings which is not a large amount at all, especially for a 21 year old.
I understand taking it easy, but 35 pitch limits is taking it to the extreme.

Baseball life in college isn't the same as baseball life in a professional league. Not only are there different strength and conditioning regiments that the guys have to go through to satisfy the team's standards, but you also don't just throw a kid into a new environment and expect him to get integrated immediately.

Groome got shelled again today. 2 IP, 5 earned runs, 4 BBs. I heard his fastball was in the high 80s, no higher than 91-92 tonight. I really hope his velocity improves with maturity.

Brentz goes deep again number 21. He's got some serious power.

In Greenville, Cedrola and Baldwin each with a HR. For Cedrola, its only his 3rd of the year....for Baldwin, its his 12th (and 38th XBH). Unfortunately, Dalbec 0-4 with 3 Ks.

Ian Cundall reported Houck's fastball was 91-93 today. What happened to the pre draft reports of him being in the high 90s, even as high as 99? Groome was reported as being able to throw 97 pre draft, yet in professional games his velocity has been mostly around 87-91

In college, you throw once a week. In the pros, you transition to pitching every fifth day. That's a very significant difference and a big part of why they go slow with draftees, even college guys.
Another huge difference is how much longer the season is. Even when these guys play for Team USA like Houck did, that's another 16 innings or so.
To be honest, the competition in the SEC was probably better than a lot of what he's seeing in the NYPL. This is just about getting him used to the routine.
