A note regarding posting on the SP Forum
|
Post by Chris Hatfield on Aug 11, 2017 15:01:46 GMT -5
The forum moderators want to remind posters of the first Forum Ground Rule regarding civil posting. It's become clear to us recently that a number of posters have refused to change their posting habits after a number of private and public warnings. Going forward, the moderators will not hesitate to impose temporary or permanent bans on posters who continue to fail to abide by the forum rules after warnings. So we're all on the same page: - Good posting! = Respectful, thoughtful discussion and debate; accepting that you may not change the mind of other posters after you have each made your points; staying on-topic (topical tangents that naturally occur as part of a discussion are fine, but may be politely nudged back on-topic).
- Bad posting! = Continued, repetitive posts after your point has already been made; personal attacks on other posters; unnecessary snark and derision; stating your opinion as indisputable fact; moving the goalposts to avoid being proven wrong; taking over the discussion with a multitude of posts (i.e., you don't need to respond to every post in a thread); baiting other posters into arguments; whining when other posters disagree with you; habitual driving of posts off-topic; failing to maintain an intelligent level of discourse (this is not the forum for reactionary, "Dumbrowski sux!"-level venting, a point referring to the thought put into the post rather than the content of the ideas expressed).
To be clear, if you're a new poster, please don't feel like this means you need to watch your step when joining and posting. To the contrary, the goal here is to create an environment in which new people feel comfortable joining the discussion! In our efforts to get folks to join the Forum this season, we heard many responses from both new and long-time members who'd felt uncomfortable posting because of the habits of some forum members. In response, we're not going to tolerate posting habits that have the effect of decreasing others' enjoyment of the forum. We've already banned posters for similar reasons over the past few months. We understand we have higher standards for posting here relative to other sports-related forums and message boards. We do so to create a knowledgeable and civil place for discussion where posters from all backgrounds feel comfortable sharing their questions, insights, and respectful opinions.

Understood. Thank you.

An additional note: we let a lot of heat-of-the-moment, off-the-cuff posts go in the gameday threads because those are meant to be real-time discussions of the game as it's happening. However, that sort of thing doesn't fly elsewhere on the forum.
It seems this morning that frustration from last night's loss has trickled into some nonsense posts in other threads. We ask that posters please try to keep their emotions in check and keep them from bringing down the level of discussion elsewhere. Thanks!
And one other note: there's a limit to the extra slack given in the gameday threads. Unnecessarily argumentative posts will get deleted there too.

Anybody who wants to know why this site is the best RS board on the Internet should take a look at last night's SOSH game thread. The discussion descended into a long, childish pissing match between some idiot who calls himself John the Baptist and a couple of others. It's amazing that the mods let it go on. Wouldn't have happened here, where civility is stressed.
It reminded me of Joe DiMaggio saying he always played hard because there might be someone in the stands watching him play for the first time. The SOSH mods should have figured out that there might have been some RS fan looking at their site for the first time last night. Is that mess what they would have wanted that person to see?

Note to moderators: before locking a thread because it seem to be useless, is there a way to check to see if someone has a long, thoughtful post that they're about to hit "post" on?
I'll never get those 90 minutes back and I suspect no one will ever see what I had to say. I'm just not up to saying it again.

FINALLY,
There are some individuals that do it consistently, those need to be ban, only their opinion is true and valid, all the others are treated like morons and they are always the same that do that. The so called , key board experts and warriors.
I recall when I mention that the RS would probably go after Trevor Story, they try to trash me and some show their lack of manners and education, now they are in the band wagon for Trevor Story and it's alright.
People like that shouldn't be allowed in the forum.

Could drop a note that just says something like: “this thread is going off the rails, we will be closing it at the end of the day or tomorrow morning etc”

There is neither a way for us to check nor an autosave feature, which sucks. The bigger risk is not that we lock the thread, but that something gets buggy (you get logged out, accidentally hit refresh, etc.) that has the same effect of losing your post. I might suggest that, if you plan on writing a long post, you write it somewhere that goes have autosave (draft of an email, etc.) so that it does not get lost.

I thought the idea of a site on the interweb was to generate activity, I guess not. The purpose of this forum is to provide a space for thoughtful discussion of the Red Sox, especially prospects and the farm system. That requires moderation to, among other things, prevent the same handful of people getting into the same handful of arguments over and over again, which crowds out other discussions and new posters. We are proud of the community that we have built here over the past two decades, which has required continual thoughtful moderation. There are other, less moderated corners of the internet if you want to endlessly argue about Dombrowski vs. Bloom or the Betts trade or COVID vaccines. This is not one of them.

I completely agree with your thoughts about this site and really do appreciate the job you guys do. And I understand how guys highjack threads from time to time with senseless back and forth, I have learned to move on and not get involved with the banter most of the time. Something everyone should try when surfing the net. I just don't always agree with every decision and I have to be honest about that thread. I had started to ignore a lot of the posts and just skim thru for new conversation. The thread had its ups and downs, maybe some stern warnings vs a complete shutdown was a better solution in my mind. And if some guys still want to rehash old stuff why is that so bad, it is baseball and it is civil.

Before I started posting on this board, I would peruse SP.com and SOSH for RS news and opinions. My impression back then was that SOSH posters were deeper into advanced stats and more prolific than SP.com posters. The SOSH crowd also seemed stuffier and not nearly as smart as they themselves thought. All in all, I thought the two sites were comparable in quality.
Eight years and 2,000 posts later, I see a massive gap, advantage SP.com. It feels like I'm more likely to find a batch of new posts here than on SOSH when I check the two sites (which is often). The posts have also grown in sophistication; the value of the news and opinions I get here is better than on SOSH.
This place ain't perfect by a long shot, but it's the best RS site out there in my never-humble opinion. SOSH would be second but in a John Wasdin (Way back!) sort of way.

First, Merry Christmas, everyone.
A question: Is there some weirdness going on with the board lately? A couple of times recently, I have been unable to get onto the Forum on my desktop or phone. Then the problem fixes itself and everything is back to normal.

Then the problem fixes itself and everythimg is back to normal. I ran into that this morning as well. Not something I see often, but not the first time either. I'm assuming ProBoards just sometimes turns off the lights, either for maintenance or because their payments are delayed or something. Edit: And Merry Christmas to you too!
