Patriots 2017 season thread

If the Nick Foles-led Eagles can score 38 points on the best or 2nd best defense in the NFL, I guess the Patriots can't count their chickens yet. Nick Foles is a legit good QB (not great, but better than Bortles or stuff like that), I'll never understand what happened in his career.

I’ve said this before but Amendola is so impressive.. not because he’s some all time player but because of his entire Patriots tenure. He’s the guy that should be the role model for youth athletes. Looking back.. his first 2+ years here, things started out poorly; the injuries, the big contract and all the criticism he took... i have never seen anybody handle that type of situation better - just took responsibility, worked hard - reworked contracts and just comes up so clutch constantly. He’s going to go down as one of my favorite Patriots ever. There are so many players better than him over the years but when all is said and done and I’m making my rankings of favorite Patriots of this era he’s going to be way up there.

Most under-rated Amendola catch was 4th quarter - he and Cooks ran outs on the left sideline. Brady threw a laser high and inside. The fact that he caught it was amazing. That had pick written all over it and he turned it into a huge first down.
But that touchdown catch... 😯

He has balls. Something not every Patriot receiver has had. Cough *Wes Welker* Cough. Amendola will have his place in the Pats HOF and he's earned it.

I'm not sure he is better than Bortles, though he seems to have more weapons. Bortles has been playing great for the second half of the year and had a very good game in my opinion. Our D just played at a very high level in the 4th quarter. They made plays! That 4th down play by Gilmore was special and was actually a very good pass, but Gilmore made an unreal play.

Foles needs a good team surrounding him and he has that now. I wonder if another team will give him a starting gig next year. Will probably be a mistake expecting him to do what he has done with the Eagles. The Eagles offensive and defensive lines are ridiculously good. That's gonna be tough for the Pats to overcome. Brady can always work his magic of course but it's going to be a lot tougher than Tennessee and Jacksonville.

I don't agree, I think Bortles sucks. On the final drive by the Jaguars, he missed a reasonably open Fournette on a play that could have won them the game and even on the Gilmore play that pass was very short. Heroic, yes, but a good QB completes probably one of those. Nick Foles is not an world beater either, but I think he makes those plays. I don't mean to sound like I'm taking anything away from the Pats, it was a terrific win by a legendary squad and the effort by the defense was incredible. I guess I'm just a Foles fan for whatever reason and I do think he could have had a better career with some better bounces, but the Pats are heavy favorites for a very good reason.

To be fair, Foles had trouble completing any passes more than 5 yards in weeks 16 and 17, which is why I was so down on the Eagles' chances to do anything in the playoffs. I thought that all teams would have to do is stack the box and stop the run and/or get a lead and it was all over. These last two games he has been a completely different QB. I still loved what he did in 2013 though with his 27 TD/2 INT season.

Searching through the Pats playbook I found this: send your fastest receiver (Cooks) up the field on a “go” route and let the defender get an interference call for an easy 30 yards. Should work every time. It’s in the book. Really.

Nick Foles owns one of the top QB ratings of all time. 2013 he had a 119 rating over 13 games. IMO someone who has that ability doesn't just lose it, in the right offense he can excel.

*insert trash talk here* I really cannot believe this is happening. It's close to crazier than 2004 right now. Congrats on the Eagles. I had a great friend who passed away way too early who loved the Eagles. I hope you have the sack to come in here and disrupt the thread on Super Bowl Sunday. Pats fans should be able to take it. With all their success, the Pats losing a Super Bowl should be about as traumatic as a person winning the lottery.

It'll be bad enough because my gf is a Pats fan, which is why I've gotten into the Pats in the last few years. At least one team that I like will win. I was never a Pats fan growing up in New England, because it was the 70s/80s when almost no one was a Pats fan. Eagles are at 58 years since a championship, may as well be 86.

Should work every time. It’s in the book. Really. I mean, yeah. I don't know why people get so upset that the Patriots are good at getting flags. It's a skill like a catcher's pitch framing ability, or a jump shooter using an up-fake to draw a foul. It's a part of the game and the Patriots would be dumb not to try and take advantage of the human element of sports that is officiating. Especially when you have a guy like Cooks who is an undersized burner. I almost guarantee they work on stuff like that when going up against more physical backs. Guys are gonna manhandle him to try and stop him from getting separation.

The Jaguars pride themselves on being physical. The talking heads ignore that while cataloging the complaints Jacksonville players had about the number of penalties for a simple reason. Rarely is it ever about anything other than stoking controversy, even when the premise is bogus.
Speaking of bogus, Mike Reiss wrote about how Cooks and Gilmore came through big despite the crap they had to put up with from talk radio. Those fools want us to ignore that Gilmore was judged to be one of the best at his position this season, or that Cooks' role changes week to week, a reflection of the team's game planning, and one of the keys to their success. Cotton candy for the mind and an absolute waste of time.

Big rivalry between Steelers fans and Eagles fans. Now Steelers fans have to root for Philly.. Another dagger in their hearts.
In the old stadium in Philadelphia they had a court room under the field and a real judge sitting there. After the game they would haul down everyone who was arrested and fine them. Or send them off to a higher court for really bad things. You didn’t want to wear the visiting team’s gear after the game if your team won. You could get hurt.
Their fans are far worse than any Oakland ones.

I've been to plenty of games in Philly and the only opposing fans who have a problem are the ones acting like complete a-holes, usually Giants or Cowboys fans. And that happens everywhere. It's not a place where I'd take a female, but NFL games in general aren't exactly a glowing example of human behavior. PS - the Santa Claus that got hit with snowballs wasn't the REAL Santa.

What impressed me about the comeback on Sunday is that TB was able to do it without Gronk. When the Pats lost to Miami in December it really showed, IMO, how much TB needs either Gronk or Edelman as a go to guy to excel. I can only dream of that offense with both healthy as it just doesn't seem to happen often. So extra kudos to TB and Dola for pulling it off.
Can't overlook the D either, regardless of the fact the Jags decided to gag on the ball, they shut them down. Stat I heard the other day. In coming back against Seattle and Atlanta in the 2 SB wins along with the AFC championship win on Sunday the Pats have outscored the opponents 48-3. That is domination when the game is on the line.

If you remember, the Oakland A’s started in Philadelphia. Just continuing a traditional of violence.

I just think you're overlooking how good he looked when he had time, versus how he looked last quarter plus when the Pats D stepped up. The last pass is a TD if Gilmore doesn't make that play and Bortles was under pressure having to move around. Same thing with Foles, if you give him all day to just sit back there he can pick a part our D. Get pressure on him and he won't. Best way to stop Foles and that offense is to play aggressive D in spurts and mix things up. There offense is like ours, they spread the ball around. I'm not that worried really, there D scares me more than Foles. Our D is playing its best football right now. Guys like Harrison added that other pass rusher we needed, Van Noy is now back and healthy.
