This entire end of season could go one of two ways. It could steel the team for the tough playoff baseball to come. Or they could reach the end of the regular season worn out and simply wilt in the playoffs. Really folks. A lineup with Moreland cleanup and Vazquez 5th has no reasonable expectation of getting it done next month. That works if you don't believe whatsoever that 15-3 in extra innings has zero affect on what they do in the playoffs. This team has heart. And more importantly, great pitching.

Moreland has to have that. Period. Yeah, but Devers is to blame, IMO, really. a 3B has to make the routine throw.

Really folks. A lineup with Moreland cleanup and Vazquez 5th has no reasonable expectation of getting it done next month. Put it this way, the starting pitching would have to be reminiscent of the last few Madison Baumgarner's performances for the Giants their last few series. Think the bullpen is good enough though.

what a win. and what a strange ending with the devers / moreland error. Our guys are fighting for their lives and winning. It is impressive.

Moreland has to have that. Period. I don't disagree but I'd like the third baseman to make a decent throw on a completely routine play.

15-3 now ties for most extra inning wins in Red Sox history. Ties with a year they went 15-4 (1943 iirc).

A sweep would be sweet as payback for them sweeping us at the Fens.

Going through Machado, Schoop, Jones and Mancini, all of them with 20+ HR and pretty legit hitters, with a 1 run lead in the bottom of the 11th inning not giving up anything AND having to deal with an error was INSANE. Possibly the most impressive inning by any Red Sox reliever this year and possibly by the most unlikely guy to do that right now. Awesome. Absolutely awesome.

I asked this here calculating machine what the chances are of going 15-3 if you have even odds in every game, and it said 1 in 321.

Wow, I missed tonights game but I'm seeing the bullpen went 4.2IP, 0H, 0ER, 0BB, 8K!

Marrero must not be an elite defender. Cuz he isn't used for defense in the final inning

Wow, I missed tonights game but I'm seeing the bullpen went 4.2IP, 0H, 0ER, 0BB, 8K! They were very effective. Smith was doing weird magic with the disappearing slider, and Reed was lights out. Kelly was tough and Barnes had his command this outing. All that to go along with Kimbrel. It all worked.

I guess my comments from the previous game apply to this one. Another ridiculous victory that they absolutely had to have although you have to wonder how they could do this.
It's amazing that every reliever they have thrown out onto the mound has somehow gotten the job done. The offense is hardly a juggernaut but they've been just barely good enough.
Meanwhile the Red Sox and Yankees are on parallel tracks. The Yanks must be frustrated to see the Red Sox pull off extra inning win after extra inning win while the Red Sox must wonder how they can shake the Yankees who are blazing hot now. The Yankees are putting on a preview of what they will do to the Twins if they play them in the Wild Card game.
Meanwhile the Red Sox blew their chance to bury the Yankees, but are doing everything in their power to hold onto the slim division lead, winning the type of games that winning teams win.
Today's encouraging developments were more effective pitching from Pomeranz who doesn't as much shut down other teams as much as he simply just scatters the hits and gets out of jams when he needs to. It's certainly working.
They got more great outfield defense, and the bullpen was outstanding. Addison Reed had a clean dominant inning. Joe Kelly was also dominant. And even Matt Barnes rose to the occasion. But my biggest takeaway was seeing Carson Smith look dominant for a second straight day.
One of my concerns was that he wouldn't be able to go back-to-back days. Cross that off the list. I was worried that his command would be off. Cross that off the list, too. As it stands, I can't see any reason why he shouldn't make the roster for post-season. He could be a high leverage weapon as he was before his injury. And we're also seeing Jekyll Kelly meaning he's cementing his place on the roster, too. Austin Maddox has suddenly become the forgotten man although I have no idea why or what he's done to deserve it.
My final takeaway from this game is that when Nunez comes back, they need to reacquaint him with 3b. Devers is way too error prone at this stage of his career. Nunez isn't Brooks Robinson, but I would think he'd be an upgrade. The Red Sox definitely need Devers' bat in the lineup, so I would hope that soon the Red Sox will play Pedroia at 2b, Nunez at 3b, and DH Devers against righties and lefties. If Hanley plays it would be to platoon with Moreland at 1b.
It is awesome to see the Red Sox get revenge on the Orioles and Showalter and it was good to see Barnes get Machado out in a key spot. Certainly better than the non hit batter fiasco from the beginning of the season.
