Farrell benching Devers for Marrero. Insane. Look at his numbers vs LHP.

I don't know about you guys but I'm glad to see Marrero and Young in the line up- you want all the starters rested for when the playoffs start next week.

I know Kuechel is supposed to be tough on lefties, but it'd be a mistake to take Devers out. He's one of the few bats that actually change the momentum of a game with one swing. Devers vs LHP .400 .474 .600 Farrell is stupid, but he isn't that stupid. Post of the Year. #HeIs

Frankly, if the issue is a lack of leadership, the guys you have to look at are Dustin Pedroia and, to a lesser extent, Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts. Ehh, Bogaerts and Betts are only 24. Betts has never even won a playoff game. That's a lot to expect. I guess it's more fair to expect leadership from Pedroia as the veteran of the team, but even then it's not really what every guy is. I know Cal Ripken always got the leadership stuff put on his plate by virtue of his status, and he was supposedly never totally comfortable with it. I'm sure there are others like that. Nomar, infamously. If there's a leadership gap then it comes from the manager and coaches, but given how many come-from-behind/extra-inning wins down the stretch, I really don't think the gap with this team is leadership in that sense. I think they're just less talented than the Astros and Indians. Leadership is a part DNA part personality "thing". Difficult to quantify. You've got to want it. Age and experience are not always predictors. Look a guys like Millar and Gomes. Sale has 'it"(MHO), but his wrist, elbow are tired (less snap) and his legs are weary (ergo pitches up in the zone). I think he could get by, as is, if he had a really good change-up, but he doesn't. As for position players, I think Betts has the right stuff. Yeah, he's young, but look at Lindor and Altuve. As for as the manager and the coaches go, I think their function is to challenge the players to achieve. I think Francona was successful is allowing Ortiz (and now Lindor) to grow into their leadership roles. I think Farrell has been successful with with the "esprit de corps" among the pitchers. Not so much with the position players. I don't think many of us realize just how good we had it with Francona as manager and Farrell as pitching coach. I know I amaze myself with my baseball acumen with the benefit of hindsight.

"Leadership." I have no idea what you folks are talking about. This team had a 93-win season, won its division, and had a crazy number of come-from-behind and extra-innings wins. Where is the lack of "leadership" supposed to be evident? If only someone had leadered more they'd have hit more dingers? I think people want to search for some magic reason for why they lost yesterday, and so they start talking about "leadership." But Sale was bad against a great offense - what more explanation do you need?
I feel like Farrell, unfortunately, believes in magic. He believes in souls but not bodies. Hence over-pitching Sale over the course of the season. (Remember when the Sox, under Francona, would try to give each of their starters a two-week break at some point in the middle of the season? That was smart!) Hence sending Sale out for the 6th yesterday for no good reason whatsoever. Hence starting Nunez, probably for the "energy" he brought to the lineup, when he broke down on literally his first step out of the batter's box. But golly, he sure does look like a leader, with that strong jaw and everything...
Well anyway, we have Pomeranz going today. With a win it's a 3-game series and we have home field advantage. Not too bad!

I really can't believe Devers isn't starting. Same, even as probably the biggest Farrell defender here it's tough to find any justification to not starting him today or not removing Sale when it was still a 3 run game yesterday. It's full on whatever works rationale.

It's full on whatever works rationale. Even on "whatever works," this is a failure. The team's second-half surge was in very, very large part because Devers took their third base and turned it from the worst in baseball and made it above average overnight. On a neutral-observer level this makes me upset, too, because Devers is just so damn fun to watch hit.

We lost our best hitter to injury and that's a blow that will not easily be replaced. With Nunez the lineup was good, without him we have too many skreaky hitters. Let's hope someone gets hot.

We are scoring a bunch of buns today. I’ll counter your pipe dream with a fact... This lineup has a combined wRC+ under 90. It could quite literally be the worst lineup played in playoff game in over a decade.

But Pomeranz is 7-0 after losses and had a 1.46 ERA against the Astros this year.
