I've said this since seeing him in Portland. The control of the strike zone and ability to barrel pitches in the zone, combined with his speed, always struck me as absolutely perfect for that role. The problem really was that he got too good. He’s looking like an MLB doppelgänger to his Portland self right now. Hard contact in the zone, laying off stuff he can’t hit with authority, and seeing lots of pitches. Makes me wonder if 2016 was just the prelude to another level beyond. He’s got the look of a guy who could (and yeah, it’s a long shot, but imo it’s a real possibility) hit .340-.350 with some real power and a passel of walks. And defensive and baserunning wizardry on top of it all.

It looks like that positive regression from last year avg with RISP against the MFY hit hard tonight haha!

There’s something supremely satisfying about watching the Sox’s underrated offense go bonkers on NY’s ace while their largely ignored pitching completely shuts down NY’s overhyped offense. That it sends the Sox to a 9-win streak and .900 W% while stuffing the Yankees back under .500 is just glorious. Players may not be able to “bank” stats in April, but teams can sure as hell bank wins. Yeah, maybe six-time all-star Chris Sale will finally get some appreciation.

The highlight on the ESPN app was, wait for it, Judge's HR.

That’s exactly my point. The Sox have Sale, Price, Pomeranz, Porcello, Rodriguez. All of the talk out there has been about NY’s offense, but somehow the fact that 6-time All Star Chris Sale isn’t even the most accomplished pitcher on the staff escapes people. Hell, he hasn’t been their best starter so far. For all the hoopla over the Stanton acquisition, the Sox getting a healthy Price back gives them probably the best 1-2 in baseball.

FWIW, this might not be the best place for it, but it’s just another reason I love Cora’s approach. Genuine leadership absolutely *requires* integrity and accountability. This is a perfect example: www.bostonglobe.com/sports/redsox/2018/04/10/red-sox-manager-alex-cora-admits-mistake-from-sunday-game/o3Oh8gM1xiKGdjafHUTzhI/story.htmlI’m becoming rapidly convinced that Cora is the perfect manager for this group moving forward, especially with so many young players, and after last year’s Price-Eck incident and IMO the egregious lack of leadership from Farrell. This is the guy who’s going to make baseball fun for the players again, and I think he’s going to be the sort of manager whose presence helps the Sox not only attract big talent, but more importantly, keep the talent they have.

The highlight on the ESPN app was, wait for it, Judge's HR. This was significant because it was the hardest hit ball in Fenway's history since the stat cast era has begun, didn't you know this? It has to have some significant meaning in this game.Edit- ESPN is embarrassing. It's no wonder why they've had to lay off ten thousand employees the past 5-10 years.

Holt shouldn't be in the line-up. Cold night, two very good starters, odds are high that this should be a low scoring game. If so defense will be even more valuable. So it's still a half a Farrell move. When I said in the Xander injury thread that Lin would likely get most of the starts at SS, I almost added that I expected Holt to get the start tonight. Greatest rivalry in sports, national TV game, kid just called up, veteran who's been anticipating a possible start since X got hurt, a pitcher who gave up the 9th fewest GB/BFP of 153 SP last year (80 IP as a starter minimum) ... the marginal talent upgrade doesn't offset the unique psychological factors. I had no problem with it.

I was soo tired I fell asleep while watching when the score was 4 zip, woke up to see the score 14-1 as the game was ending. BUMMER for me but exactly the type of game I was hoping for, statement game!! I know it is early but as I have been saying this team is very good and can win 100!!

Good news Thornburg’s velocity is up to 95. Man if they can get him back to what he was before that’d be yuuuuge. Probably the biggest weakness on the team.

Consider that this offensive mashing happened the first game after the Red Sox most impactful hitter thus far in the season just went on the 10-day DL! Great game for the bats to go crazy.

With all of the angst over last year's drop in HR production, very little has been said about the most important aspect of this team's performance going forward. It's their overall youth. The core is very young and they're only going to get better as they progress towards their peak years. Analysis that bemoans the lack of power, or a regression in this or that stat, needs to include that caveat. These guys are still learning the pitchers, how to hit, how to prepare, how much work it takes,... all of that.
For all the worries about the lack of scoring, the Sox currently have the best run differential in the AL, and are second only to the Angels in runs scored, and the season is just starting. If I had the time I'd make my way down to Anaheim. That may be a hell of a series, one just oozing with talent.

I would be freaking out about Stanton if I were a Yankees fan. It looked like he was completely blown away by 93 mph fastballs that he knew were being thrown.

Pretty awesome to have Price going tonight to keep the pressure on them. In my eternal saltiness at the national media’s incessant search for new ways to fawn over the Yankees, I was thinking of that last night. Price has been *outstanding* so far. Brutally efficient. He can go out and absolutely smother them today, and I think he will. And still, the story will be about how the Yankees lost, and their uber-lineup didn’t produce. It won’t be about Price’s return to dominance, or the Sox having a fantastic, balanced lineup. That I couldn’t respond to Chris’s lighthearted sarcasm with some absurdity of my own only highlights the depth of my pathos. I want the Sox to absolutely obliterate the Ysnkees. I want scorched earth. Nuclear wasteland paved with dirt fused to glass. I want the Sox to pile on humiliation and indignity so much so that the Yankees DO monopolize the spotlight. I want TVs awash 24/7 with their ignominious hopelessness against their greatest foe. Let there be such a reign of dominance by Boston that the psychological toll is utter, and complete. I want inescapable tsunamis of negative press, sending the Yankee organization into a crippling tailspin. Cashman’s exile, bloated FA contracts, and a wasteland of the farm not seen since 1930. Do it, David. Be the hero our town needs. The ‘04 team drove a stake into the heart of the Yankee organization...Mr Price, do the honors and release baseball from the nosferatu that has bled the fans of so many other teams for years. Cut off the head. Ummm...that was a little intense. It’s just a game, right? I will embrace the underdog role, again. Play ball!

David Ortiz: The gift that keeps on giving! Man, do I miss Papi. Especially this time of year, around marathon time. Great hitter, but better human being. He just added so much joy to the game, for me.
