Walden back up, so it will probably be even more of a bullpen game for the PawSox. Though Walden probably wasn't stretched out enough to go beyond five at he most and more likely four, so it was looking to be a bullpen-heavy affair anyway.
Always a bummer when the Red Sox stomp on your Thoreau reference.

I know. We've come so far since "Walden, Thompson and Haworth are pitching" as a thread title.
Workman, Buttrey, Martin, and Scott all threw 20 or more pitches yesterday, and I'd assume they're therefore unavailable. I'd guess that Josh Smith, who hasn't pitched this year, will be the first one out of the gate, followed by Brasier, then Jerez and Elias.

I'm going to guess that Elias is who replaces Poyner as the lefty after Walden comes up for a game or two.

I think they could use a guy who could go multiple innings more than a LOOGY, so that's why I'm leaning towards Elias. I forgot about Kelly's looming suspension also so there will be two spots (I think?).

Interested in Jerez this year. Maddox, Buttrey, and Jerez are the 3 upside relievers down in AAA this year.

Elias, Jerez, Brasier, and Smith are the only bullpen guys that didn’t pitch last night. Jerez and Elias threw two days ago and Brasier three days ago. With Walden going back up to Boston, do they skip straight to Haley or go with a sort of bullpen game?

Generally you don't move a guy up on such short notice, especially one who is used to pitching on rotation. If Haley went to bed last night thinking he was Friday's starter, usually they won't screw with that and move him up. Could see them trying to get three or even four out of Elias (whether or not he'd be first to throw, I have no idea).

There's discussion of this very topic upthread, addam603.
Agree with James. It's definitely going to be a bullpen game. Having 4 relievers for a bullpen game is plenty, really. I could also see them getting someone from Portland for a night to be there if things go sideways.

Tommy Layne would be eligible to come off the DL tomorrow, right? Or can they back-date a minor league DL stint to before opening day?

Layne suffered an oblique injury in camp, he's not phantom DL.
In theory could be healthy now, but just FYI.

Thank you, I had missed that totally.
Not a ton of Will Latimer/Jeremy Kehrt/Mike McCarthy types on the Portland roster who would be the obvious guy to move up for 10 days.

One of my favorite minor league unicorns, the double bullpen game because both starters got called up that day!

Actually, looks like they're moving Haley up a day. So there ya go. I'm an idiot.

That's from me and new. Layne was escorted from the mound mid-batter in the last sorta-spring game against the Cubs; glad to know it's only an oblique.

It's now showing Reyes as the starter for Greenville.
Also the starters for the two A-ball opponents are different, although I think Rome was a copy/paste issue.

4 of Barfield's 5 starts have been at DH. Gotta wonder if he has some nagging health issue that was part of why they traded for Flores. Wasn't like they were hurting for bodies in the OF there. Between Castillo, Tavarez, Travis getting LF reps, Lin getting CF reps, and Sturgeon in AA to come up if needed (he can certainly at least field all 3 positions at a very good AAA level), there didn't appear to be a need, but if Barfield was dinged up, the reasoning starts to make more sense.

Talk about him being injured more, it’s working.

They just dinged Elias for a balk on the "lefty pickoff move." Definitely looked bad on the replay - from the angle he used it looked like he stepped mostly toward the plate. I'm just very surprised to see that called.
Edwin Espinal took him VERY deep earlier in the inning. Broadcasters mentioned that every homer today, which would include Barfield's, was a no-doubter.

Any indication yet as to why Haworth was scratched?

Any indication yet as to why Haworth was scratched? He's scheduled for tomorrow, according to MiLB.com, FWIW.
