Nice inning by Barnes. Umpire needs to find a new job.

A good slide and Benny is safe. He probably was anyway but his feet are 3 ft ahead of his hand, headfirst and he is safe by 2 ft.

It's bad enough when players slide headfirst into other bases, but at least the players covering those bases aren't wearing body armor. Imagine what would have happened to Mookie yesterday if he slid headfirst. It's a good way to end your career early because of serious concussions.

What a start to the season. Buck is getting his butt handed to him and I, for one, am loving it.

Thats why I said his feet were 3 ft ahead of trying to getting the hand in there. What happened to the blocking the plate rule?

The best part of all of this is that, even partway through a season, teams tend to play to their projections. So even if the Sox are a .574 (93-win pace) team the rest of the way, they look to finish at 97-98 wins right now. They’re putting them in the bank. NY and Toronto, to a lesser extent, are really going to have to grossly outperform projections to make up those games and take the division. The Sox are just an outstanding team right now, and that’s with Sale being somewhat inefficient, Devers and JBJ struggling, and assorted maladies and some bad luck (Beni). When the weather heats up the offense is going to be unstoppable.

The starters won't keep up this pace all year, but the only way to get to the Sox is to get to the middle relief. If you don't do this by the 9th inning, it's game over with Kimbrel.

The 2007 team was the most talented Sox team I've seen in my life. This Sox team has a chance to be better than them.

More beautiful baseball. The Sox have been amazing. Today it was great pitching, notably by the middle relief, Hembree and Barnes, who between them had nine outs to get. Interesting that Carson Smith didn't get the call in the 8th inning to set up Kimbrel.
I'm enjoying that the Sox are up 5 games or so against NY but I'm not taking it too seriously. It's still way too early to get into projections and take them too seriously. Just pile up the wins and see where you stand. Obviously it's much better to avoid the Wild Card game than play in it, but even that doesn't guarantee anything.
Right now I'm just enjoying how crisp and clean they've played. They've been a joy to watch. They'll hit a downturn at some point as all teams do, but the heartening thing is that they're winning and they still don't have the offense clicking on all cylinders. They still don't have Pedroia and Bogaerts back, and Betts and Hanley had some health scares. And Pomeranz has yet to join the party.
And somewhere I know Dombrowski dreams of Seattle Smith and Milwaukee Thornburg setting up Kimbrel with a deadline acquisition such as Britton if healthy to set them up. If that ever happened, this team could shatter their franchise single season win total.
This is a team that can have it all. What a joy so far.

I think that middle relief will improve. I went on an extended discussion of Hembree elsewhere, but suffice to say there are positive indicators of improvement (esp SwStr rate and O-zone Sw%, meaning he’s fooling people). Smith is coming off TJ. Thornburg has been ramping up the velo. With Rodriguez and Pomeranz back, Johnson and Velasquez become depth. Buttrey, Maddox, Martin in AAA. Beeks a potential multi-inning guy who can get RHH out with the cutter and a CB that’s brutal on LHH...plus avg LHSP velo that could play up in relief. No standout guys right now, but lots bodies, meaning they should luck into a breakout/comeback or two.

Listened to the game and watched the Celtics box score on my phone while I worked in the garden all afternoon. Triple joy!

Don't know where you live but when I lived in Maine I had a large garden and a dozen semi-dwarf fruit trees including peaches, sweet & sour cherry trees, apricot, plum and apples. In Florida I have lychee, mango, banana and avocado. So I was doing the same as you; keeping track of the Sox and Celts while thinning the bananas and mulching the others. Today life was great!

Even if the Sox middle relief doesn't improve and it stays inconsistent, I expect the problem to be fixed by Dombrowski come July.

North Carolina! Heirloom tomatoes are my thing (author of the book Epic Tomatoes) - finishing up my spring speaking tour in Wyoming next weekend, then Detroit..then I get a break! Seeking a hosting venue in FL...haven't identified one yet (major botanical garden or arboretum with an active speaking event slate).

Is Holt playing himself off the team as Lin plays his way on? Holt still has an option - send him down to work on his hitting...bring up Travis, let Lin get the innings?? (just thinking out loud and intrigued by Lin's bat and glove)

Lin has come a long way. When I saw him in the GCL, I had no thought that he would make the Bigs....small and slight, slap hitter. Today he mashed a 405' shot in deep cold and against the wind. Good story.

Is Holt playing himself off the team as Lin plays his way on? Holt still has an option - send him down to work on his hitting...bring up Travis, let Lin get the innings?? (just thinking out loud and intrigued by Lin's bat and glove) I had assumed that Holt had enough service time to refuse an option, but that won't happen until he accrues another 120 days. So he indeed can be optioned until just before the trade deadline (July 26th would be the last day). I think the plan all along has been to option Holt when and if all the positions players (including Pedroia) are healthy. That explains the lack of urgency about getting Swihart some catching time so that Leon can be dealt. Hopefully what Lin is doing will tweak that plan, because I don't think there's any question that a team with Lin as a utility guy and Swihart as backup catcher is better than one with Swihart as utility and Leon as backup catcher. In particular, Lin is a hugely better backup SS than Nunez. And with Holt at Pawtucket, you're comfortable dealing Leon in order to create an MLB roster spot for Lin. Holt should stay with the organization all year to provide depth. In the short term, Holt is necessary until Bogaerts comes off the DL. He's the sole backup to Lin and Nunez at 2B and SS. But you could see them optioning Holt instead of Lin when Bogey does come back. Either guy would be temporary until Pedey comes back.

For those who don't hang around Amazon much and have no idea how many reviews or how high an average rating constitute being impressive ... Epic Tomatoes, with 244 reviews and a 4.8/5.0 rating, looks like a candidate for the shortlist for Best Vegetable Book Of All Time (or is it fruit? Berries, actually, if I'm not mistaken). Another clue: the book's more than three years old and sfs67 is still doing speaking tours.

I went to the game with my two boys. It had to have been one of the coldest sporting events I have ever attended, which includes a number of Patriots' playoff games.
Sale's velocity was down and he didn't have his typical control. I still can't believe he pitched with short sleeves. I had on two sweatshirts, a vest, a winter coat, hat, gloves and fleece blanket and it still felt cold.
The Red Sox have played well, had some luck and a favorable schedule against three of the weakest teams AL (e.g. Rays, Jays and Orioles). Still feels, good to see them off to their best record in their history. Hopefully Mookie is back on Tuesday night and Bogaerts is back soon as well.
