With Lucena coming up, that gives them 3 catchers. DL stint for someone maybe?

With Lucena coming up, that gives them 3 catchers. DL stint for someone maybe? They were at 23, so not necessarily. Procyshen has only played twice so far in 8 games, so he might have something nagging that made them want to bring someone up for the doubleheader, at least.

Sturgeon and Quiroz are both off to very good starts to the year.

Someone check and see if Cole Sturgeon is still human. 4-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 3 R, and SB. Now batting .417 with a 1.213 OPS early on. Already halfway to his career high in homers.

I'm kind of curious whether Quiroz has any major league future. Is De La Guerra really enough to block him and keep him down at AA?

I'm kind of curious whether Quiroz has any major league future. Is De La Guerra really enough to block him and keep him down at AA? I think it's more that De La Guerra's versatility makes him a better fit as an extra infielder, and he's the more obvious choice to move up and down when injuries happen - without Bogaerts, Pedroia, and Hernandez on the DL then he's in Double-A too. Whereas they want Quiroz getting the consistency in Double-A. If they think he can play then it doesn't make sense to promote him just to send him back down in three weeks.

Cole Brannen entered today's game with a 30.4% K rate and he struck out in 3 of his 5 ABs. He's 19 and playing his first long season but that's concerning for a slap hitter. Something to watch IMO.

That said, it was telling that CDLG essentially beat out Quiroz for a roster spot in Pawtucket to start the year. To me, that spoke volumes about the latter's readiness for MLB, especially considering he's functionally a year older than De La Guerra. I agree with James that readiness had the most to do with it, but it's at least interesting that they felt DLG, who basically popped up out of nowhere last year, is more ready than Quiroz. Of course, give Quiroz credit for responding exactly the way you would want him to respond to a disappointing assignment to start the year. If De Jesus continues to hit .194 through most of May, it wouldn't surprise me to see Quiroz come up at his expense.
