Rough game for Darwinzon. Doesn’t even make it out of the first inning. 3 walks, one hit batter, one hit, five earned, and one K.

On the one hand I hate to reduce a player to a type. But on the other, Bobby Dalbec has 18 strikeouts, 8 walks, 3 homers, 3 HBPs, 2 doubles, and 2 singles in his first 50 plate appearances.

FWIW, 30 pitches has been seen in the past as kind of a magic number at which point guys come out of games, so that's likely why they didn't let him finish the frame after the two walks - he was at 32.

Mata also struggled with his control recently. Perhaps weather related ? We'll see.

Ben Chomsky tweeted this morning that it was a beautiful day in Zamunda Salem for a game, so it's unlikely that's it. Currently says 64 degrees and sunny on Google.

Only 36.5% of his plate appearances are balls in play (through 3 PA today). For reference's sake, Joey Gallo had 39.8% in play last year, and Aaron Judge was at 42.2%.

There's nothing wrong with Dalbec types in your system. As long as he's getting on base and making *enough* contact, he could survive and make it up the system. The problem is him making enough contact.
It'd be cool and different for this team to develop a potential Adam Dunn type.

It'd be cool and different for this team to develop a potential Adam Dunn type. Of course it would. But check out what Dunn did in the minor leagues: www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=dunn--001adaAs a 21-year old, Dunn was placed in Double-A after spending the previous season in Low A. He hit .334/.444/.671 between Double-A and Triple-A with a 19.4% K rate before forcing his way to the majors in July. Chris Davis, another guy who might fit that type, hit .317/.374/.594 in the minors and made it to the majors at 22. Of course, those guys can't/couldn't play defense at all, while Dalbec can.

Yeah the hope with me is that Dalbec can progress through the system and hit close to .250 at each level. At that point, he's built enough value to keep or trade. Adam Dunn and Chris Davis are crazy talented, that's for sure (especially when they young in their 20's, where there bat speed was about as as good as it was going to get).

Yeah, being Adam Dunn in High A does not portend the player will be Adam Dunn in the major leagues.
I was about to type something here about what the discussion would be if he were to carry his current line for the year, but that wouldn't make any sense. In 53 plate appearances, he has 4 HR, 9 BB, and 18 K. If he gets, say, 500 PA this year, that prorates out to 38 HR, 85 BB, and 170 strikeouts. More conservatively, if we use 450 PA, it's still 34 HR, 76 BB, 152 K. Those are just bonkers, unrealistic numbers (neutral connotation). Something's gonna have to give here, and it's more likely that it's the home runs than the K's.
It is fun to have a true TTO hitter in the system again though.

The system is really hurting for power.
