Cole Sturgeon and Esteban Quiroz are neck-and-neck for SoxProspects April Player of the Month. Particularly strong or poor games tonight could swing the race.

I guess Quiroz isn’t going to be making a push tonight for that award after all.

Not to be lost in the heated competetion for Player of the Month, Tyler Thornburg is expected to join the PawSox today.
Also, I legitimately feel bad for Rusney Castillo. Okay, yeah, money - so I don't feel THAT bad. But he's a major leaguer stuck in Triple-A because of the confluence of his ridiculous contract, the Red Sox being at the payroll limit, their stacked outfield, and the loophole in the CBA that allows the Red Sox to keep him there and not count it. Since the start of last year in 457 PA, he's at .316/.348/.492, with 31 doubles, 15 HR, 18 of 21 in stolen base attempts. The 13 walks are too low and signal he'd be a low OBP player in the majors, but he's struck out only 66 times. He makes a lot of hard contact (which is a big change from when he first came over and was overmatched) and plays quality outfield defense.

If it weren't for the fact that outrighting a player no longer removes his contract from the CBT calculation, they could add him to the 40-man and immediately outright him again. If he instead opted for free agency, it would essentially end his contract. Were it not for that provision, he could go to them, say he'd immediately re-sign to a more team-friendly deal if they outrighted him, and fix the whole thing. But that new provision closes that loophole. That said... this option was available to him all of last year (I think, right?) if he was that unhappy in AAA and wanted to increase his chances of being called up.

Also, good on Rusney for not becoming completely disgruntled. Even in AAA, I imagine it takes a certain level of focus and motivation to put up the numbers he has, and its nice to see that he has seemingly given everything he has to the team. I wish he could get a shot somehow.

If somebody grabs him in the Rule 5 this December, I think they r on the hook for one more year at 12 million. in return for 6 years of control. So we may be down to the last few months of this folly

So now that the game has been postponed for Salem their month of April is over...leaving Austin Rei, Nick Lovullo, and Conrad Gregor a combined 4 for 80 with 40 strikeouts. Good news: only way to go is up.

Thornburg looked IMMACULATE. Struck out the side. Commanded his fastball very well and the curve was absolute filth. Great movement.

Interesting with the 6 years of control for Rusney...given his massive current contract, and his age (31 this summer, reportedly) he stands to make far far more as a minor leaguer + a few callups (72.5M) than he likely ever will as a consistent Major Leaguer.

Every year in Portland in April....just brutal....Hate to say it as a Mainiac who loves Hadlock, but move South to Connecticut or play away as much as possible in April.

Maybe, but the infield dirt situation is an anomaly here. It was gorgeous on Saturday and would have been a great day for a game, and even if Sunday had been a normal rainout (not sure how much rain Portland got as I left around 12) I'm sure they would have played tonight.
