They win a game in this series. Good enough.
Done with Hembree. We learned a lot about this bullpen and this manager in one short series.

Tonight, J.D was Big Poppy. That's why the Sox signed him.

What has happened to Velazquez? Hembree needs to be traded. I'm guessing he's emergency backup for Price Saturday. Agree about Hembree, April is over.

Geez, that series was intense. Like the Sox-Yanks series of yore, back in the mid-'00s.
So the Sox won 2 of 3 in Fenway and the Yanks won 2 of 3 in the Bronx. Red Sox are 26-11 and tied for first place, even after the Yankees win 17 of 18. Everything is good, everything is fine. On to Ontario.

As rough as the series was, they came into Yankee Stadium to face a scorching hot team and took 1 of 3. A few breaks go our way and we could have won all three.

Re: Hembree Andujar was ambushing fastballs (He's a hacker who doesn't ever walks, just check his Milb stats) so that was a bad game planning. The second hit? That was a check-swing blooper (pure bad luck)...as for the walk to Walker he got screwed by the umpire (guessing Torre made a few calls during the rain delay) and he's been absolutely worthless when facing LHB as his career numbers show. So I won't read too much into that outing frustrating as it was. And Free Poyner.

And Free Poyner. yep; and then Kelly, besides that first terrible walk, got a bunch of weak groundballs that inning, one of which found a hole. Yankees have been supremely lucky during this run, on top of playing great.

It seems like his secondary stuff just doesn't play well with his fastball.

They fixed the JBJ problem with Moreland. --------------------"
I'd rather have Jackie on one of his hot streaks. But I remember last winter when JDM was talking about being a fulltime OF. I wondered then if JBJ would be able to handle being a reserve guy? Maybe he can maybe he can't?
Good trip so far let's finish strong in Toronto.

As far as trading him, I don’t think that’s a bad idea per se, depending on who they get back. There are a bunch of 6th-7th inning guys on this team and no pseudocloser “set-up” man. Hopefully Thornburg gets back soon and Smith improves, or even Barnes steps up. If they have to get a Reed type, look for a salary dump. But the angst is a bit much. They’re tied for first at 26-11, and NY just went 18-2 in their past 20. Good lord, the season’s less than 1/4 old.

Hembree wasn't as bad tonight as it might seem, but walks and lead off hard base hits never lead to good things most times. He gets hit hard A LOT too. He was twice thrown into a situation on back to back appearances against the bottom of the order and didn't get the job done. Tuesday was a dumpsterfire. You can do worse than Hembree. You could have a below replacement level or replacement level reliever, but you can do better than Hembree in a bullpen. It doesn't help that this guy has no options left either. Edit- He played Tuesday, not yesterday. My mistake. Kind of lumped it in together.

That was a scarifying win. Wasn't happy that the Sox handed over a victory in the 2nd game of the series and wasn't too happy that the Sox bullpen unraveled a 4-0 lead in the 7th inning. Between watching Hembree, Kelly, and Barnes, it was like watching the 3 stooges.
But despite all that, I said I'd settle for 1 win, and that's what they got so I'll take it. So they get to go to Toronto where the atmosphere is tamped way down and they can just play baseball and I can go back to watching the games without the hair on the back of my neck standing up.
And by winning, they're re-tied for first and back playing .700 ball and Chris Sale goes tomorrow which is always a good thing.
As for this game, E-Rod was awesome - he really stepped up. Only rain could stop him. JD Martinez is a godsend. So glad the Sox have him. And I was a bit surprised, even in the bandbox, that Cora didn't defense JBJ for Martinez. JBJ can't hit, but he sure can field and it might have made a difference. Fortunately it didn't as Kimbrel put an end to the nonsense.
