Should DD extend Kimbrel? Please add a comment.

Unanswerable at this time. Far too early to even think about it. So I guess that is a no at this time.
He is good, and has value, but a lot depends on what the other internal options do this year, what other free agents are available, whether DD makes a mid year trade for a reliever, and the other needs of the team. He will be expensive, but really, this question needs context, ie. what the rest of the team looks like, and the other needs versus costs.

With no other context involved, sure. He's good at pitching and I would like him to pitch for the Red Sox for a longer time.
Should they extend him at like 5/$90? Given budgetary constraints, no, probably not.

That Pablo Sandoval contract really sucks, because they don't have any wiggle room to try to up the AAV on a shorter deal.

If Thornburg shoves this year and shows he's capable of closing, then he might be the guy that takes over that role. Chris Hatfield highlighted the strong right handed reliever class this winter, and there are much cheaper alternatives. You could resign a Kelly, and possibly another reliever for the same AAV (as Kimbrel would make) while keeping the years lower. You still make the QO and get the compensation, but I have trended toward thinking Kimbrel won't be worth his next contract by a great deal. It'll hurt losing him though.

Neither of those options sound completely appetizing at this very moment, but you certainly are looking at those guys as options down the stretch. You might even consider Barnes for the job, but I don't think I love that option either. Beyond that, take a peek at the free agent relief market for next year....its fairly deep with some interesting names but I'd have to do a lot more research to tell you who might be realistic options. Off the top, I know Adam Ottavino is shoving right now and could represent a cheaper alternative to the guys w/ more substantial closer experience (e.g., Cody Allen, Kelvin Herrera).

Carson Smith and Tyler Thornburg have thrown 17 2/3 innings combined since the start of 2017. I'm not relying on them for anything.
Which is why it sucks that the Red Sox have no money in their budget and no farm system.
