When you check the MiLB game thread and you find out that Jalen Christopher Beeks is starting tonight... ![](https://media.giphy.com/media/3o7abIileRivlGr8Nq/200w.gif)

Sturgeon promoted to Pawtucket and in the lineup tonight. Barfield is the countermove, not clear to where, per McGair.

They both look like viable back-end starters who might end up being mid-range or low-end 3s. Put Sale/Price/Rodriguez 1-2-3, and that’s a pretty good rotation. Makes QOing Pomeranz a no-brainer, and frees up a little cash down the road to actually pay Sale and maybe extend Rodriguez.

I don’t fully understand not letting Barfield go. Or at least finding him a trade. I know they are thin in the OF, but lin/Holt/Castillo all would be ahead of him, since I think a long term injury might get Castillo as a shot, money be darned.
On other hand, Charlie’s madden for number one prospect? He’s done more to earn it than anyone but Berks/shawaryn

So Robby Scott has been pretty good thus far, if we settle on Velazquez as the long guy, do we punt BJ and unleash Scott?

I don’t fully understand not letting Barfield go. Or at least finding him a trade. Honestly I think it's because they still see the same promise in him as when they signed him. He's been a mystery this spring; I feel like every at-bat I've seen in person he's had an issue with the strike zone and has ended multiple ABs in frustration. I can't help but think he's looking for pitches he can really drive, but trying too hard not to strike out (and then striking out). I would love to see him take a breather and knock around some AA pitching for a few weeks as everything warms up. But I can imagine he thinks that with Sturgeon's promotion there's no guarantee they'd make room for him again soon.

K% is down, lots of flyballs (7 flyouts in this game) and subsequently allowed another home run for the 3rd game in a row...He needs to get his act together and come out of his slump real quick! This mediocrity needs to stop!

I may be alone in this but Shawaryn doesn't impress me, with that delivery I think he'll have trouble getting major league LHB out. He strikes me as a future reliever, I think Making has a higher ceiling.

Textbook case, it seems. I've heard of the Sox doing this before (and don't know that this is something other organizations do or don't do, so I don't mean to criticize them as compared to other orgs). One player they demoted to Portland one year told me they basically told him he belonged in AAA, but they didn't have room for him and didn't want to let him go to another organization either, so they weren't going to release him. I'm sure this is a similar situation. I see it from both sides - there's got to be an organization that has room for Barfield in AAA, while the Red Sox don't want to let him go only to have him figure it back out. Meanwhile, the Portland outfield is now thin as hell, with just three on the roster in Mars, Matheny, and Tendler. No idea when Monge will be back - he was playing in games in XST on April 20 when the lineups got posted on social media, but as the DH. You have to imagine that if the Red Sox pulled the trigger on this move, Monge coming back can't be far off.

I can't find anything on his injury or possible return, but he has some OF experience according to his profile and with De La Guerra, Witte, Lovullo and Rivera (and eventually Tobias) manning 2B/SS/3B maybe Quiroz gets some OF time to add to his versatility. They do love their middle infielders with OF ability.

Feels like they messed up on the CDLG/Quiroz season-opening assignment decisions. Either way, given that they've exclusively played Quiroz at 2B, I'm assuming they see him as 2B only, and pretty much none of those players are going to take playing time from Quiroz, save maybe CDLG.
