I think Cora has a lot of potential, but he's doing a lot of the same things that Farrell did. And I wanted to see Farrell go long before he did (team quitting on him for a month a couple times).
However, IIRC, Farrell was not fired for these quirks, but rather for widespread player under-performance.
6 weeks in, I wonder if the issue was rather systemic overvaluation of our talent. The catchers are looking like their true means are as 2nd division back-ups, and not good ones. Benintendi is not showing improvement, Bogaerts better at 3rd, where the bat is less exciting. Ditto Devers to 1st. Pedroia is not going to hit for power again (though anxious to have him back). JD is as advertised, a defensive liability and a very good DH, Hanley is marginal as 1st/DH. JBJ will probably come around some, but the salami bat is making a 2 WaR ceiling. Sale is great, Porcello a bit snake bit. Price, not going back to consistent 1/2 or even inning-eating 3. ERod and Pomeranz, so much potential, but effectively back-end. Rest are spot starters. Relievers defy analysis for me.
So I am seeing an awful lot of 5's. So then, contending for the 2nd WC through September, and hoping we get red hot in October is looking like our ceiling

So then, contending for the 2nd WC through September, and hoping we get red hot in October is looking like our ceiling I don’t think I could disagree more. The biggest problem with Farrell was the culture. Cora has done a lot to change that. Furthermore, I think your projections are unreasonably pessimistic. We’re going through a minor rough stretch, but this team has the talent to be one of the best, if not the best team in the league. We’re maybe a quarter of the way through the year. The Sox will be fine.
