Beeks & the PawSox square off against Erik Swanson in his AAA debut. He was 5-0 in 6 starts for Trentoon. Over 40.1 innings, he had 52K's, 12BB's, and just 21H and 3 ER's.
I hate it when the Yankees have good pitching prospects.

Ofelky Peralta is one of those names that just seems like it is in the probables all the time. Which makes sense, since it's a memorable name and he started against Salem five times last year.

Note that with the Red Sox off day, the PawSox game is on NESN tonight.

Also on that Fringe Five article... a mention of Cavan Biggio, who has two roles, one to serve as second baseman and the other to remind us how old we are getting.

As someone who lives in the Pac NW and doesn't have outright access to NESN (just MLBtv access), I'd certainly welcome any looks/observations from those who catch the Beeks start tonight.

Why is Maddox still out there? He was rocky in his first inning, and he is on a rehab assignment anyways. It should be Buttrey now. Scranton now has tying run on second with nobody out, and a 2-1 count.

Yay! We have a team that doesn't have a losing record. Go Salem!! Yup...go figure. The cumulative record is way under .500....and not much of a surprise to me..most. We had a depleted farm and then lost our 2 top guys to boot. But, as I was reminded more than once in the past when I pointed to our losing milb team records speculating that it was reflective of our talent level, 'milb wins and losses don't count and are not a reflection of talent....It's more about developing players'. OK so I am going with that and looking for any possible player progress and hoping for MLB reinforcements when needed.

Wow. Mike Olt is hitting .250 with a .910 OPS. No one else in tonight’s lineup was hitting above .240 or had an OPS above .670.

To be fair, it was Cole Sturgeon's fifth game and they were giving Ohlman, Betts, and Castillo the night off, who all fit at least one of those criteria. Also league average for the IL is a .696 OPS (compare to .735 for the AL)—it's a bit of a pitchers' league. But yeah, not a banner year for the Pawtucket offense.

After the first inning when Beeks gave up 2 Hrs, one of them a 2-run job, he was quite impressive, pitching against a nearly all major league lineup. The other run was a result of his error, throwing wild when trying to pick off a runner on first. He didn't walk anyone. He struck out six. He had a good mix of pitches, with a FB 92-94, a cutter, a big curve and an impressive sweeping slider. He looked like a major league starter. Velazquez and Maddox also were very effective. Sturgeon also was impressive with two doubles. Sam Travis played LF for only the third time and had a number of catches, including an impressive one against the short fence, robbing the hitter of a HR.

I ran Beeks' splits by time around the batting order ... I should have done it by inning, too. But IIRC he's had some first-inning trouble previously this year, which suggests he may not be as potent a relief weapon later in the year as it seems now. But it also is good news for his potential as a starter, because it's often a fixable by taking a longer warmup (with a break midway).
The 2 HRs were to Frazier, who's only in AAA because their organization is so deep, and Bird, on rehab. Subsequently, Frazier flied out to RF and had an infield single, while Bird fanned twice swinging.

Yeah I'm not going to kill him for giving up homers to those two. As for Beeks in relief, don't forget the potential effect of his stuff playing up if he lets it fly immediately. He could be working on how much he should hold back (poor phrasing but I can't think of anything better) early in outings to make sure he gets deep into games. Getting out there and letting it rip for an inning might mitigate the first inning trouble.

In his first game vs the AAA MFY he struck out Frazier twice and from the 3rd AB on he started to swing early (swung at the 2nd pitch) and yesterday he saw 5 pitches in all 3 ABs (the HR came on the 1st pitch he saw). Ginger boy didn't want to get embarrassed by the cheer awesomeness of Jalen Christopher Beeks it seems.
