I wanted Kowar in this spot, as you can never have too much pitching, but if they're taking the longer approach and let them marinate this was just as fine a selection. The bat plays to all sides and his swing is pretty clean. Ultimately, more likely a 1st baseman, left fielder comp than a third basemen.

Well I'll be happy with a Freddy Freeman type.

I'd have to guess they're going to use him primarily as a 1st baseman. They have Devers and Chavis coming up at third, but at first Travis is looking like he might stick to the bench, and I wouldn't rely on Castellanos or Ockimey either.

Unless Devers or Chavis are playing third in the GCL, Lowell, Salem or Portland, he's going to get a shot to stick at third. You don't worry about positions until AA or AAA at the earliest, and he is likely 2-3 years from reaching that level. Might as well see if he can hack it at third before moving him to the bottom rung of the defensive ladder.

He'll play 3rd until he has to move if ever.

I'm a little confused about the "Freddie Freeman" comparison that was thrown out yesterday.
From what I can tell from reading - it's not like I saw anything live in person - the biggest concern about Casas offensively is his hit tool - will he hit for high enough average?
It sounds like he has good discipline at the plate, but he could be prone to striking out a lot. It looks like he could have as much raw power as anybody in the draft.
The first image I get is a three true outcome type of guy, but somebody that's better than Josh Ockimey.
Freeman hits for a decent to good batting average - I think he's hitting quite well right now actually. I wouldn't think Casas has Freemans' hit tool?
Then Keith Law questions the power, which I find kind of weird.
Just looking at him, I think the guy has power to all fields, so I'm not concerned about an inability to hit a home run. The question I have is will he strike out too much that it affects his batting average too adversely? And even at that I don't worry too, too much. I mean, guys are striking out 200 plus times a year and if you're Aaron Judge you can still hit for a strong batting average.
I guess I'm just trying to get a handle on what the Sox potentially got.
My impression is that the Sox got a mid range BA (hopefully) power hitting 1b who will draw walks and can solid at 1b if 3b doesn't work out - a middle of the order type of bat.

From the files of future headlines after a Tristin Casas walk off home run: Tristin the Night Away
Casas Cashes In
and probably never seen quotes: Yon Casus has a lean and hungry look

Yeah, and worst case scenario he learns how to handle himself a little better at third than if he just stayed at 1st right off the bat. If he's comfortable at both positions it doesn't look like a situation where the positional switches affect the offensive development.

What I like about this new draft format is that guys sign quickly and get almost a full season of ABs instead of holding and getting 50 AB in the NYPL.

Apparently, he was home-schooled for a bit and graduated HS in 3 years. I feel old seeing a 1/15/2000 DOB.

He was set to be in next year's draft class but reclassified (I'm not sure what the technically involves, but that's the term that's been used) for this year. Probably involves doing something in order to graduate, perhaps involving whatever homeschooling he had and getting credits for it?

Two words come to mind... Sam. Horn. I remember Sam Horn quite well. I was a fan of him. He had incredible power. He would fit right in with today's game at DH. But the only position he could play was 1B and he was not good at that. Casas appears to be a much better athlete and so I don't think there is a comparison.
