Has anyone seen Requena pitch this year? Everything seems to have just come off the rails with him. Wondering if there was some kind of mechanical issue or what. He took a step back this year in a big way.
His good numbers from the DSL and GCL can be discounted easily enough, but even looking at what he did in Greenville last year to what has happened in Salem and Greenville this year, it’s clear that something went wrong.

The big issue at this level (Salem) is that a lot of guys discover that hitters will no longer swing at pitches way outside the zone. Requena doesn't have overwhelming stuff, and didn't get a ton of swings and misses with us. Can't speak to what has happened since he went down to Greenville. Keep in mind how young he is, though; he won't turn 21 until 7/20. There's plenty of time for him to get turned around.

Over in DSL land, Danny Diaz (who was hitting .162 going into today's game w/ 0 BBs, 10 Ks) is 3/5, HR (his 3rd of the year and his first grand slam). Antoni Flores also hit a HR, his first as a professional.

It wouldn't surprise me if were getting unlucky if 4 of his 9 hits are for extra bases. It's not like the 27% K rate is terribly high, although it's not great or anything.

Diaz showed a decent hit tool today. Singles to left and right and the grand slam was to center. So that’s a positive.

Won't be Eric Fedde for Syracuse tonight - he was just recalled.

Danny “The Dong” Diaz hype train is leaving the station. Granted, these days it is a very quiet station.

Interesting take. Don’t think it’s a good idea this early.

I disagree pretty strongly that it would be the most interesting team since Salem in '16. Houck/Mata is a better combo of prospects at this point than Diaz/Casas would be. Devers and Chavis were on the same team in 2017 for a few weeks.
As for the sensibility of moving Diaz to the GCL, I really have no idea.

I don't know that I agree either, but I think you have to also take into account Decker and Northcut (smaller chance of Antoni Flores too) when having that conversation. Although this is a potentially exciting GCL lineup it is also a very volatile one. There's a real solid chance that one or more of these guys don't live up to the scouting hype, and/or requires several years of development before doing something exciting (like Chavis for example).

FWIW, not picking on you - you just have the posts I find it interesting to respond to. Diaz showed a decent hit tool today. Singles to left and right and the grand slam was to center. So that’s a positive. So I don't know that this is indicative of a hit tool necessarily. Ability to hit to all fields isn't the same thing as the hit tool proper. Interesting take. Don’t think it’s a good idea this early. For what it's worth, they did exactly this with Devers and Espinoza, among others. It's not that rare of a thing for a bonus baby. For example, I would have been surprised if they hadn't done that with Daniel Flores.

Yeah, I think I'm more tuned into the now 12 Ks relative to the 0 BBs. Anyone reading, please take this with a huge grain of salt (because SSS DSL stats and all that jazz), but every legit Sox DSL prospect I can recall in recent years has had a BB-K ratio of around 1: Bogaerts (30/37), Devers (21/20), Castellanos (20/25), Cedrola (23/33), Margot (36/25), Basabe (49/58), etc. I'm not trying to bash him, his 3HR already match or surpass the HR totals for each of those guys (except Margot's 4HR) in fewer DSL plate appearances. It just appears early on that he's taking a hyper aggressive approach in a league where I'm pretty sure I could have drawn a walk by now. Heck, Nelfy Abreu had 5 in one game.

Just didn’t use he right terminology. I think his three home runs have gone to left (2) and center (1), but he’s had some hits to right field too. Not just a pull hitter.

We'll have to see if it normalizes. Despite what I said above, I actually think it's more likely he gets another few weeks in the DR before coming stateside, which they've done before (I can recall the "WHY ISN'T DEVERS IN THE GCL YET?" handwringing in 2014 fondly). And now that I think about it, if Casas and Northcut are going to be in the GCL, bringing Diaz there too might not make any sense...

Not to mention Brandon Howlett who although is certainly lower on the prospect totem pole than Casas, Northcut, and Diaz, profiles well at 3B and would fit in the GCL if he ends up signing. Its a nice logjam to have and I wonder if it means Casas may actually see more time at 1B right away than initially anticipated.

Curious if he has seen any uptick in velocity or if he is still in high 80’s?

He just helped me out today; I did an interview with Mata in Spanish, and I had Daniel do first-person translation (e.g. "I feel" rather than "He says he feels") for it. I had COMPLETELY forgotten that he was starting Game 2. Then he goes out and tosses a QS. Love him to death.
