Could Duran net a good starting pitcher in a trade this offseason? He's got 8 HR and plays average defense. he’s produced at a 3.8 WAR/600 PA clip on the league minimum you mean He’s created ~15m in surplus value this year, even with the cold streaks and the injury. He’s got five years of control left. He’s a former top-100 guy. His speed is a real weapon. Unless the medical on his toe is way out of whack I don’t see why he wouldn’t be attractive as an MLB-ready piece in a trade package.

If I was a GM there are to many red flags for me, his defense is suspect, Toe injury that required surgery for a guy who needs his speed to be good, Some issues with his mental health. I would not part with any pitcher I valued for him. I am rooting for him but I still don't trust him.

For those who are still down on Duran because of his defense, his 'feet vs average' (statcast's measure of jump; similar to range) was 2.8 this season - that's 2nd in all of baseball (for all 101 qualified outfielders) to Kiermaier.
He's still only an average defender out there as he has to do better at catching the ball and holding baserunners (and I'm sure much more), but the potential is huge. Also his arm strength is 97 of 144 for outfielders, so there's potential there too.

I was very high on Duran coming up through the minors but after seeing him play in the seasons previously I figure he would never pan out and I would have traded him for a bucket of balls. What I saw this year was a guy who was a decent outfielder but that was night and day different than the defender he had been. All, and I mean all the credit goes to him he had to have worked his a$$ off in the offseason to make that much improvement. So here are my concerns with him going forward. Toe surgery, will he still have that elite speed? He will basically be rehabbing most of the offseason so we will not know until next spring training. He is not a natural fielder will the fact he will not have the same offseason program allow his gains defensively to back slide? Even if they don't back slide no improvement will be made this offseason. He was having some issues with his mental health. This in a season that for him I thought went great. Boston can be a rough place to play if you get off to a bad start. How would he deal with that? I would still root for him and the Sox were a much better team when he was playing. I just don't trust that it is repeatable . If someone would give me a good starting pitcher for him I would make the deal.

I tried to never miss a Duran AB. He may or may not get traded. As far as entertainment goes, I hope he stays. If they get a decent SP back it would be great. He had to have kept the defense on edge when he was AB.

Turf-toe surgery is typically a 2 month recovery time with only extremes going to 6 months (which would take him through February). I found a study that shows only 80% of NFL players fully recover from turf-toe injuries, which I had expected to be much higher. That part is a bit concerning. He seems to have had one of the best surgeons for soft-tissue toe injuries - also repaired Patrick Mahomes' turf toe.

I might have read more into the length of rehab than was stated. But the articles I read were saying that they expect him to be back by spring training. That implied to me that rehab would take a while to get back up to speed.
