I was looking up todays stats for the minor league systems, and it made me think a little. The Sox will be bringing up some players fairly soon when the rosters expand as you know. Brandon Phillips has looked pretty good so far, but is there a chance that Tony Renda pushes Phillips for the 2nd base slot? I know it is possible that both could find roster slots, but Renda has been an animal in both AA and AAA. As of tonight he is hitting .387 with 4 hr, 5 sb, and 20 rbi across both levels. Not to mention he seems to have a very good aproach at the plate, strikes out very little and can generate walks. I am not sure how good Phillips is at his age on D, but he is always a good bat to have. It just seems that Renda could possible be a valuable player based on his hitting abilities, and his versatility on D. On the other hand you have a proven (prior all star) in Brandon Phillips who is experienced and will help offensively. Just curious on what you guys think as far as Tony Renda vs. Phillips, or if both could be helpful down the stretch.
Edit: Phillips has won something like 4 gold gloves at 2b. So he may be fantastic defensively still. I just haven't seen him play to determine what his defensive value is these days.

I think a lot depends of the tax and if we ultimately blow by it. I’ve seen we’re close but I’ve also seen (Red Sox payroll on twitter) say we are already at $240. If we decide to go over Ian Kinsler would probably be a pure salary dump. He still plays great D and has rebounded from an awful April-May. I just don’t know what to expect from Phillips but we may take this to Aug 31st to give him, Nunez and Pedroia time.

I’d be all in on Dozier if I were Dombrowski.

It may be wishful thinking, but I'm hoping that, come August 31, Dustin Pedroia is our second baseman.

It may be wishful thinking, but I'm hoping that, come August 31, Dustin Pedroia is our second baseman. I was thinking that when I started the thread. I really want him back, but its not looking so good. Im basically at the point now where I completely exclude him all together, and part of me also wouldnt even consider bringing him back (if I were the sox) to have him healthy next season. I wonder what the status of Marco Hernandez is at this point. Haven't heard a word on him, but I think he will eventually be starting caliber. It is really nice to have Phillips waiting in the wings, but Renda has really pushed me to thinking he may be the best option. As a call up this year of course. My guess would be this decision coming down to versatility, defense and the potential to hit. Thats obviously necessary for all players, but in this instance im refering to Renda vs. Phillips. What is needed at the time will also be a huge key as well. If the D is suffering towards the playoffs then you pick D. Versatility would probably be Renda as the choice, and if hitting is desperate we go with Phillips. Renda has been raking so may be even on who could help more.
