I can't help but think about Nomar when I hear Red Sox #5 as if it is really his number. Hard to imagine that number belonging to somebody else. I'm sure Kinsler in his brief time here will do the number proud. Natural reaction, I think of Dewey when I see Price with #24. The number that should be retired, along with Tiant's #23. What is the FO going to do when Pedey quits playing? Odds are he's not going to have hall numbers.

If he can have 3 more halfway decent seasons he most likely is a HOF. Its why I love the Kinsler trade, let him rest for the rest of the year, no reason for him to play now. The extra rest might help him bounce back. They are just going to have to give him extra rest going forward.

I do like how hard it was to have your number retired as a Red Sox... Those days seem gone though. If Pedroia is a Hall of Famer one day and Manny isn’t that’d be the nail in the HOF coffin for me, if it’s not there already.

I'd bet dollars to donuts they retire his number. He's probably in that gray area along with Varitek and Wakefield, Red Sox lifers who aren't Cooperstown HOFers. Maybe Pedroia comes back healthy in the future and has a final push to get Cooperstown consideration but that's hard to bank on. Either way he's a Red Sox just like Tek and Wake, and nobody will get issued #33 or #49 anytime soon, if at all. In time I think they could be retired, sort of the way the Sox made an exception for Johnny Pesky's #6. Maybe we do see #15 hanging up their for Pedroia. Wish we could see #23 for Luis Tiant and #24 for Evans, who should both be a HOFers.

Dewey was a Red Sox through and through though. Manny played for just those 8 years and was awesome but he was a product of our times. I mean Jimmie Foxx put up some monster numbers for roughly the same amount of time but nobody has ever pushed for #3 to be retired because none of us ever saw him. Honestly, I'm not even really disagreeing with your sentiment, and the Yankees have two #8s retired with both Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra having the same number, so it's been done before. I guess you could say that Pedro was only around for 7 years and his # was retired so he wasn't really a lifer during his career - although now that he's around the club constantly - maybe he is - and I do think that's his intent!

So, WAR is reductive and all but also kind of a nice shorthand. Check out the Red Sox franchise page on B-Ref: www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BOS/index.shtmlEveryone on the top line who played when the team wore numbers (so, excluding Young and Speaker) who is no longer active has had their number retired or de facto retired (nobody has worn #21 since Clemens) except for Dwight Evans. In terms of career value he's short of Fisk and maybe Tiant, but in terms of contributions to the Red Sox? He's far, far above whatever standard they've established. Anyhow, I guess the point is that Ian Kinsler will need to have a hell of a two months for me to consider retiring #5 for him but here's hoping.

I would certainty have guessed Pedroia would be a HOFer a few years ago, but now I worry. Missing an entire season is inauspicious going into his mid-30s. The problem is he needs more seasons to anass numbers (2,000 hits, for example), but he can't water down other numbers (.300 BA, e.g.).
More than anything, I worry that the Sox will have a 2B with range limited by his knee and diminished offense — but his legacy demands you play him. I don’t want Pedey to be like Jeter.

I'd say it's certainly more likely he's done as a high impact player than he comes back to 85% of previous production. Which sucks to think about. Can't think of a lot of players with such a big blip at 34 that come back to similar production at 35.
