The game has changed a bit for 2 main reasons:
1. The players have gotten better. Faster and more skilled. Guys who are “tough guys” are harder to have on the ice with faster more skilled guys. They get skated around; the guys who have some skill and are fighters are hard to find.
2. Player safety. Hockey lost too many stars to goons. And guys who were fighters to get the crowd going had short careers and then had to live in a dark room for the rest of their lives. See PJ Stock.

Well, my two favorite players of all-time are Cam Neely and Eric Lindros. Those players would just be in the penalty box permanently today. They handed the league to the Cindy Crosbys.

I almost brought up Neely but they both work. They are rare tough skilled players but they are also players who’s careers were robbed of their best years because of injuries due to the type of play we are discussing.

I gotta go with Bobby Orr and Scott Stevens No matter who you go with, they are gonna to be the exception as opposed to the rule and they can play in todays game in a tough clean way while still producing and sending a message so we have not lost those guys... look at Ovechkin... he’s like a modern day Neely without the injuries from a stupid goon

Yeah, Dmitri Kasparaitis had a big part of ending both careers and the instigator rule protected him so he had zero fear doing it. If preventing injuries was the motive for the league, they wouldn't allow the super hard kevlar pads being used as weapons which are still in use. Well, I misremembered, that was Ulf Samuelsson that did that to Neely. But here's another one:

Well that sucks. The hot Petr Mrazek was killed off by his injury and there's no way in hell that they ever win another game with that kind of goaltending. I would have pulled him after the 3rd goal.

That looks like Marchand should have gotten the penalty first. The penalty came on the reaction.

That looks like Marchand should have gotten the penalty first. The penalty came on the reaction. That’s what happens with stuff off the puck. Nice to see a strong second period from the Bs finally.

This is what the league wants. Players acting like total jack-asses without ever having to pay for it. In fact, they are rewarded for it.

This is a bloodbath...wow Maybe Brind'Amour pulls Mrazek if it reaches 10-0. My god the Canes are a bunch of p*****s, but so is every team. He has given up 10 goals in the last 60+ minutes. The week long layoff wasn't kind.

This is a bloodbath...wow Feels like total malpractice leaving the G in. Thought for sure he'd be out for the beginning of the period, but for him to be in two goals later is astounding.

Yeah I don't watch hockey at all, but the Bruins seem like they're on one of those runs. Carolina isn't even putting up a fight. Goaltending seems to be a clear disadvantage in this series for them.

Hey Tex is this the team you were warning us about? Don’t get cocky.... they haven’t lost at home and were down 0-2 to Washington...

Hey Tex is this the team you were warning us about? My memory is awful but I don't recall having an opinion on their chances against the B's.

Remember when I said the Canes might win but they need to do better on special teams? Welp... they didn’t

Remember when I said the Canes might win but they need to do better on special teams? Welp... they didn’t Yeah, but even then it was a very well played game by both teams. The Bruins are just more talented so the Canes have basically no margin for error. Considering that, it's somewhat remarkable they played a really tough game that really tested their opponents, which is the polar opposite of what the 2018-19 Boston Celtics did against the Bucks.

All true but the difference in this game is Tukka Rask. 20 saves in the first period when the Canes came out and played as good as they possibly can is a bit demoralizing for a team that is desperate. B's so far have shown they have what is needed to win a CUP. Peaking at the right time, great depth and a goalie standing on his head while doing a triple axle. One more thing, how about those deadline deals? How often do we look back and think the deals didn't work out and wish we didn't do them? Worked for the Sox last season and looking pretty good for the B's now also. I smell a CUP!!
