I think we all know the best way is to develop your own relievers, yet that takes years.
You can certainly make a case DD has been inefficient getting bullpen arms, yet like you pointed out its a crazy volatile market. Every team is inefficient! Your way though will almost never work. You will kill your team year after year doing that and force you to make deadline deals after deadline deals. Kimbrel has his ups and downs, but he was still our best reliever over the whole season. Heck even when he sucks he gives up 1 run in two innings, with some good D. Joe Kelly when he sucks could give up 5 runs in two innings. Lets give DD props for actually getting a lightning in a bottle guy, instead of saying you want a pen full of them! Not at all. Feltman might be up by mid-season next year, ready to out-Kimbrel Kimbrel. And there are endless examples of guys being picked up by pitching-wise teams and going from good and cheap, to unbeatable and cheap overnight. Blake Treinen is only the latest example, one that's cost-controlled right through 2021. Koji Uehara is yet another example (my favorite one!). Papelbon had 35 saves in his first full season as a reliever and never looked back. Brasier looks as if he's pushing for a spot on the list of reasonably priced alternatives as well. Picking relievers just takes a different zen I think. And it is the place to save money. Turning it into yet another income stream for agents is a mistake, a costly one. The problem is that people expect the Red Sox to have closers in every position of the bullpen now.

Cora says Kimbrel might be tipping his pitches. Still doesn’t explain why he command any of them

Hi All,
It’s been a while- due to preoccupation with work, the country, and also some disaffection with Baseball both actionwise and just the greed and lack of loyalty to team vs. Hockey (looking at likely free agents Mookie and Bogaerts). However, started watching every game vs. Yanks and this series and yes, very much back for now- thanks to you all for this wonderful forum! Some observations- Yes in 50 years that is one of the best postseason games I’ve ever seen- perhaps not as clean as 1975 game 6, but just as nail biting. Sacrilege, but as someone sitting in right field at Shea Stadium where Clemente made a diving catch to save Bob Moose no hitter in 1969, he had the cannon, but I don’t know if Roberto gets to the ball Mookie did with the speed to make that all time amazing play! Two great teams- I figured the winner last night to take the series. Eovaldi showed the best righty stuff since Pedro, perhaps including Beckett 07. I wish Redsox had a manager like Cora all those past times- he showed such skill, ie, in recognizing when Porecello in his first game this series, still with a good pitch count and still not giving up runs, was having harder foul balls hit off him, and drifting in command just a bit and pulled him. But given that, and yes I know Barnes has been overused, and sat down after he got that one batter out. Regardless, not bringing him back for the 8th and using Kimbrel for a 6 out save was a total Grady Little move and SHOULD have cost them the series- thanks AB. And thanks to you all!

Cora says Kimbrel might be tipping his pitches. Still doesn’t explain why he command any of them I read that as just Cora protecting his closer. Most of his pitches weren't that close. 2 of his ball 4 FBs were almost brush back pitches. Pretty easy for hitter to lay off.

How many more times are we going to hear about the Verlander trade that almost didn’t happen?

With the win last night and the pitching matchup tonight, it feels like the Sox are playing with house money in this game. Get ‘er done anyway, I say.

Alright David Price. Let’s see what you got Hot take through two batters... he looks pretty good. Good velocity and a decent pitch mix shown already. Edit. That’s a nice little inning for Price. Just a line drive for Altuve. More please?

TBS announcers are awesome. 2nd batter of the game, strikeout. "That's the first strikeout for David Price."

TBS announcers are awesome. 2nd batter of the game, strikeout. "That's the first strikeout for David Price." I’ve been watching without sound since mid game 1. If Sox have a big moment or there’s a play under review and I want to hear why, I rewind and turn it up.

I’m ok with giving up hits. They’ll happen. Just stay away from the walks.
Good Start!

If Sox have a big moment or there’s a play under review and I want to hear why, I rewind and turn it up. Maybe I should clarify that. They said it in a tone that it was surprising that it took so long for him to get his first one.
