So here we go again, following the precedent of the Smoak trade proposal, I'll be trying to present a deal for a player that I believe currently is undervalued and misused. Case in point: Domonic Brown.
First of all, why do we need him? As of this moment the Red Sox projected OF consists of Victorino, Ellsbury, Gomes and his Sweeney/Nava platoon mate. Potential liabilities jump immediately at you. The proposed lineup against RHP would struggle to break the .340 wOBA threshold as it is. Their numbers are (2012/career): Ellsbury (.307/.350), Victorino (.279/.321), Gomes (.316/.318), Nava (.354/.343) and Sweeney (.310/.330). For those of you watching at home, that's not good considering there's a platoon in the mix.
Seems to me that by acquiring a better LH outfielder this group's potential production would see a major boost overall. By playing all the games in LF (and maybe some in RF) he'd be the de facto starting LF, only resting in favor of Gomes against LHP.
I like Nava, and I even enjoy Sweeney's versatility and defensive chops but I'm not expecting Nava to hold this batting line for long and Sweeney... well, he hits like Ryan Sweeney.
Having said that, from identifying a flaw in the construction of the roster to identifying a potential target and then acquiring him still goes a long way. I think I did that, keeping in mind the premise I wrote in the first paragraph.
Who is Domonic Brown? What does he bring to the table? Brown is a 25 year old L/L outfielder who profiles best in RF, his range is average for a corner outfielder but his arm is a major plus. Was not so long considered a top10 prospect, the Phillies wouldn't trade him for anyone, they made a stand of not trading him even for Halladay (eventually managed to include Taylor in the deal) but since then for some reason they haven't given him too much of a chance with the MLB team.
In the last 3 seasons he has accrued 492 scattered PA, bouncing between the AAA team and the majors but never given much of a stable playing time other than 2 month stints in June/July 2011 and August/September 2012.
You look at his numbers and they look pretty bland. Why would he be better for us? His career BB% is 10.4 and he has a 18,9 K%, yet only a .269 BABIP for a player who is not slow by any means. If he has even an average BABIP we'd all be looking at him as a Jason Heyward clone and wondering why can't we have guys like that. That's not considering what he can do in the future even, he's only 25 years old, supposedly still on the way up in the career arch and to top it all, he's not eligible for arbitration until 2014.
Why don't the Phillies use him then? Why would they trade him to us? Because they're the Phillies and Amaro Jr. is still their GM? I kid, but they indeed seem to be going all-in with the current team. Brown at current is the team's 4th outfielder behind Revere, Young, Mayberry and perhaps Ruf. Teams in this place of the win-curve tend to favor let's say a RP more than a 4th OF, particularly if said team has a guy like Amaro Jr. calling shots who repeatedly has passed on the chance to hand the job for Brown to lose.
Would Aceves do the job for us? Workman? Salty? I think there's a match to be found. What's your take?
